That we humans are not at the top of the food chain is a point recognised by every Australian who surfaces or swims in the ocean.

I'm afraid more sharks are eaten by humans than humans by sharks. So, I'm afraid, we are. 😬

How cool you all are. I saw alligators and sharks only in movies))

Well, nature must somehow react to the actions of humanity, as if it itself does not want to respect (protect) the environment in which it lives.

Andrew,  you are more right than you may know.

I've known a like who lost his leg to a shark while surfing in South Australia, two people including a relative who were bitten by poisonous snakes.  I myself have had encounters with a poisonous snake and spider; both thankfully left me alone (and I, they). I had an unfortunate encounter with a box jellyfish that laid me for a week.  From that, I know that  most creatures simply want to be left alone, and in most cases attacks people suffer are the result if them being in the wrong place at the wrong time,  or doing something they shouldn't (carelessness included).

At the same time, anyone who has studied meteorology or oceanography is aware that nature seeks equilibrium.  We can witness this simply by watching the movement and interaction of high and low pressure systems.  Then too, bushfires while devastating also replenish the earth energising and allowing new growth.

It, all of nature is all quite amazing!

100% But even more. The fact that life exists on our planet is a miracle of miracles, because there are many, many more planets on which life does not exist. The question(rhetorical) is why this gift is used so foolishly.

True. In fact, shark is often labeled as 'whiting in Australia. Its filets make great fish and chips.

We are slow learners and there is a lot to learn.

It's actually quite good. So's rattlesnake! LOL!

But, a bit unsettling knowing you're no longer the top of the food chain, eh wot?

😁

My sister-in-law and her husband are vegetarians, and she once gave my husband a book on the topic.  There was a chapter entitled something like "Getting off the top of the food chain" and he pointed out to her that it didn't quite mean what the author implied.  To my husband, it meant that if you were NOT at the top of the food chain, something else WAS... and that you would likely be on the menu....

ETA: So, does rattlesnake taste like chicken?  I've heard that it does.  Of course, the weird one is ostrich -- which DOESN'T taste like chicken; it tastes more like beef (it's all dark meat).  Years ago there was a restaurant in town where we almost never ate anything on the regular menu because the the specials were so interesting (the two guys who ran it had previously run a high end place in a town a little to the north of ours).  The place had started as a "Hey, let's open a diner" and sort of got out of control and sadly they priced themselves out of the market; we ate there a lot the first year we lived in our current house because it took so long for the kitchen remodel to get finished.... :headsmack:  But the one owner, known as "Little George" actually joked about it, one time: "Give us the name of your kitchen people -- I want to call them up and tell them to take LONGER because we need the business!"

Well, one night my husband called me from work and said "I had a really bad day today!" and I said "So did I.  Let's let George cook (the two guys who ran the restaurant were both named George, known as "Big George" and "Little George").  So the waiter said that the special that night was medallions of ostrich and I said I'd try it (we didn't both get it because it was $25 US and that was over 20 years ago at this point).  So the waiter said "How do you want it?"  And I said "I dunno -- I've never had ostrich!"  But Big George was behind the counter and I said "How do I want this cooked?"  And George said "How do you like your steaks?" and I said "Medium rare...." and he said "Well, that's how you're going to want your ostrich!"  (And George was right!  And a few years later we went on a bus tour to an ostrich farm east of here, and the ostrich burger I had for lunch there was definitely overcooked....)

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

'Salties' as we call them can be found very far up stream in rivers and creeks as well as out to sea.  They are nasty, sneaky b*st*rds!  The larrikin wisdom is to always have your mate wade in first.

Pens used Noodler's Ahab, Noodler's Nib Creeper, Twsbi Eco T, Parker 45, Platinum Pocket pen, Parker 21.

Inks Noodler's Kiowa Pecan, El Lawrence; Platinum Black & Carbon; Waterman Mysterious Blue; R&K Verdigris.

An awful lot of stuff for 2 little sketches.

I like it, it looks like watercolor pencils, like science icons.

I gave up on the Inktober challenge this year, I'm not feeling inspired.
