While Andrew_L probably can't see our posts, my thoughts and prayers go out to him and his country.  I have a friend who is originally from Ukraine and I don't know if she stilll has family there.  I put out feelers last night on FB with a mutual friend to ask if she knows how Dina is doing during all of this (Dina's husband is American, and they have kids) and was told that yes, Dina might still have family over there.

I second @Chi and @como. Stay strong, @Andrew_L, I hope things will be better for you and Ukraine soon enough.

 

(We took action to support students from Ukraine in my university, in the Netherlands. I know other universities are also taking good measures to help out. If we all do our bit, there will still be an enormous burden on Ukraine and the Ukrainian people, but it will be less and also you will know your loved ones are taken care of, albeit abroad.)

Unfortunately, promise a difficult night. Russians rage and shoot at civilians in direct contact. In Belarus, the tank brigades of Belarus were put on alert. But we are holding on!

On March 1, at about 10:50 p.m., the Russian military launched an air strike on a residential area in the Osnovyansky district of Kharkiv. There is no military facility near the site of the explosion, only a playground surrounded by residential buildings.

I second @como. Been talking about this to friends and family in various countries in Europe. There is much going on, helping out Ukrainian people who were forced to leave, sending aid to people who are still under fire. It is relatively little for now, but everything helps. 

 

@Andrew_L, stay strong! Justice will emerge, even if later, and freedom, even if it too later. Just in: "The UK and 37 other countries have formally referred reports of atrocities committed in Ukraine to the International Criminal Court (ICC)." (The Guardian, 7 minutes ago. This is a big deal, can lead to top leadership being convicted for war crimes while still in power, analyzes Politico.)

I just found out about your location, @Andrew_L.  I've been watching the news with disgust at Putin's actions, but with complete admiration for the strength of the Ukrainian people.  My heritage is half-Ukrainian, so there's a personal impact for me even though I'm a great distance away.  Stay safe.  Stay strong.  I'll try to do whatever I can, even though it's only a small help.
