Drawing of Zora Neale Hurston. Noodler's Walnut ink, Rhodia N° 19 paper, Nib Creaper with vintage Waterman extra fine nib.

This was my third try trying to draw her 😩. I don't even think this looks quite right, but it's still the best version.

EDIT: the source photo for reference: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/57/Hurston-Zora-Neale-LOC.jpg

Also @Andrew_L nice color choice on that last one. I've really enjoyed your work in this thread and it helps inspire me to try to improve. Thanks for making this thread!

The subject is an English Lab. There are a few issues, but overall I think it's decent.

A different English Lab

Heart of Darkness ink, Creaper with Waterman nib, Bristol Board.

I think with this particular ink, it works best to do shading after line work. As a side note, the non-waterproof component of the ink allows for instant very slight shading, which is neat.

It's quite interesting to see how you tackle a character originally drawn in a much different style from your own. Turns out pretty well, I'd say :)

Hey, give me back my ink!

Ink: J. Herbin Perle Noir

Pen: Nib Creaper with vintage Waterman nib

Paper: Rhodia N° 19

A few notes which may or may not be interesting: I used the back of the nib to color in the ink bottle. This is a fun technique that I haven't really found much use for yet. This nib is really good for it for whatever reason. I realized after I finished that this squirrel's head is a bit too small 😧 Driving me crazy now. The squirrel pictured is an American Red Squirrel, which are quite small, which means that ink bottle must be absolutely tiny, like probably 5ml or something, hahaha.

Thanks.

The reverse side, as a rule but not always, gives a line on one size (sometimes 2) less than the reight side of the nib. Therefore, it is a very good tool when used judiciously. I use the reverse side very often, especially when I need to make shading on the face - where very precise, thin and light lines are needed. For writing, this technique can also come in handy, when you need to make notes or footnotes between the lines, compactly add missing thoughts or additions.

Yes, I am familiar with reverse writing. Very useful for getting slightly finer lines. I don't really use this as much as I used to, but I probably should more often, actually.

To clarify what I meant, I was actually using the flat of the nib to lay down a lot of ink at once (in this case used to fill an area with a solid color). It's not unlike what you get with a bent/fude nib at a lower angle. Nibs that don't have as much tipping actually sticking up on the back of the nib and/or are bent forward slightly tend to be the best for it. I haven't found too many uses for it, myself. It can be nice for comparing the mass color of ink.

Aha! I understand .. for these purposes the best pen in my opinion is the Pilot Namiki Falcon (Elabo).

Hello everyone! On the eve of Christmas holidays, I wanted to summarize how my year 2021 went: 54 new reviews, 20 updates were written, many pens were serviced and repaired, and a lot of new ink tested. Many thanks to all old and new friends, those who supported me, those who commented, those who collaborated, those who inspired me. To all with the coming holidays, wish to everybody the great mood, I love everyone and fountain pens too! :)
