A beautiful picture of a beautiful lady. Thanks for posting this.

Andrew, I am curious about how long it took you to make this beautiful work.  It surely is a work of talent and patience.

Thanks guys!
Much depends on the mood, the working pen and the circumstances - if everything converges on a positive factor, then the work goes faster. Usually one drawing takes from 2 hours and sometimes up to a whole day. I can’t say more precisely, I don’t keep track of the time when I draw :)

I just figured out that "USSR Kharkov's Avtoruchka #1900" is the name of the pen you're using. If it is like other things made in the Soviet era, it is probably built like a tank—or an AK-47. I couldn't find much information on this pen. Would you be willing to write a review of it?

Well, yes, yes, these are interesting models from the post-WWII-war period, which were probably made on the technologies that left to USSR after reparations. These models are very similar to the products of the Pelikan company. I have already done 3 reviews of these pens, which can be read by the links below the pictures(full review).

Thanks for pointing me to your meticulous reviews. They are, indeed, very sturdily-built pens. A very appropriate compliment to the ZIL-118.

Etchings have unique line and tonal qualities that I find most appealing. For example, this old botanical illustration of a "Nevada Desert Dice Tree" ....

.

.

.

.

.

Or, of course, I could be pulling your leg.

This is supposed to be a thread about pen art after all, whereas etchings are made by scratching the coating on a metal sheet with a scriber tool, etching lines into the sheet in acid, inking the sheet etc. etc. .... .

.

.

Here's how the image was actually made.

1) Pen sketch, size 11cm square, on 90gsm copier paper, using a Pentel Superb BK77 black ballpoint. Oil based ink.

large.IMG_0857-01.jpeg.50cd4e8004c5197f7157cd9c474e0e86.jpeg

The line and tone quality is clearly ballpoint pen. Reflections from the glossy ink in the top part of the photograph cause a nasty purple metalic sheen.

2) The back surface of the picture was lightly sprayed with hairspray (pastel spray fixative has the same effect).

large.IMG_0861-01.jpeg.08e43528731cb8437194d9f52cdcfa92.jpeg

The alcohol or other solvents in the spray penetrates through the paper, softening the pen lines and darkening filled areas. Also the Pentel ink changes to the colour shown above. Other brands of ballpoint pen give slightly different hues. The oil based ballpoint ink sinks deep into the paper, loosing its metalic sheen.

.

.

3) The weird purple hued photograph was processed in the (free) Snapseed App on an Android phone, reducing colour saturation to zero, giving the first image shown at the top of this post.

.

.

.

4) Meanwhile, on the back face of the 90gsm paper another strange image has appeared ..

large.IMG_0862-01.jpeg.d8077ff1bbd5d6137b7dd08ec95460d7.jpeg

5) For a more extreme transformation of the ballpoint sketch, that bleed-through image can be processed in Snapseed. Including a step to flip the image L-R, restoring the original orientation.

large.IMG_0862-02.jpeg.0120aa4192d488788a749e8a214d5169.jpeg

.

.

If you fancy trying this, be very sparing with the spray. The paper is just slightly dampened, with no wet liquid layer on the surface. With care you can also spray on the front of the picture.

If you accidentaly miss an area it is safest to avoid overwetting by waiting a minute or two for the first spray treatment to dry, and then spray the offending area again.

You can also add more ballpoint lines onto the sprayed drawing, after the spray has dried, and then spray again.

Another pretty picture of a pretty lady. I love the way the hair looks so lifelike.

Please keep up the good work.

One of my favorite quotations, I use it all the time. I also like the drawing; very thought-provoking.
