Hello community! Happy Valentine's Day everyone! And is this the best reason to find a use for any fountain pens for their intended purpose with big warm meaning !:)

One of the greatest unsolved mysteries in music history is who was the woman who was so inspired by Ludwig van Beethoven that he took up the pencil(fountain pen) instead of the sheet music and wrote a passionate and ardent love letter that has stood the test of time?

I love the mystery woman - she looks like she's wearing a mask (how very appropriate for this time!

Wonderful penmanship - I'm in awe :)

The last sketch with this pen and this ink is a "Chinese woman in traditional wedding dress." I wrote everything out :).

Testing a Sailor "Fude De Mannen" fountain pen. Sailor Black ink

Cool. Do you use Sailor ink from bottle or cartridge? How are they liquid? I tried it from the cartridge and it seemed to me they were a little thick\gel.

Testing Sailor Fude De Mannen, for drawing and sketching:

I use these three,

Sailor "Black" ink cartridges. (Two are included with the pen in its card blister pack.)

Sailor KiwaGuro cartridges, and also KiwaGuro from bottle with converter.

Cross Black from bottle with converter.

All three inks seem to have normal Fountain Pen ink viscosity.

However all three inks do show a problem, when used in the Fude pen for drawing, that might be interpreted as "thick/gel" ink behaviour.

The problem seen is that half the ink volume in cartridge or converter can sit up at the back of the ink reservoir and a large air space forms down at the business end, where ink is supposed to pass into the pen feed.

Though the Sailor feed holds plenty of reserve ink, the fude nib is capable of laying down bucket loads of ink onto the paper when used in a freely executed dark-toned drawing. Result is that the first half of a drawing may go swimmingly well, followed later by slow ink starvation, dry pen strokes, and a very frustrated artist.

My tentative diagnosis is that the cause is a combination of ink surface tension, plus the relatively narrow internal diameter of cartridges or converter, plus a pen body held at a fairly constant angle and moving over the paper more smoothly than in typical text writing uses.

Solutions tried include:

1) Taking agitator balls from other brand cartridges and inserting into converter. (Could not find any that fit.)

2) Trying to remember to occasionally unscrew the pen body and twist the converter knob to force out the air and reload the pen feed with ink. (Works well, but when deep into the drawing "zone" I keep forgetting to do it.)

3) Adding a surficant to KiwaGuro to break surface tension. (0.1% added dishwasher rinse-aid gave no observed difference, 0.4% to 1.1% shows some benefit, 1.4% shows problem solved - when pen is gently inverted the ink and air now swap ends in the converter and the inside walls of converter are wet with ink - not beads or droplets, at 3.5% the ink in the pen is still good but paper feathering and bleed is now excessive.)

4) Finding a large internal diameter, transparent, eyedropper pen, with a Fude nib. (Moonman C1 - just acquired ........ work in progress.)
