What would you get?

There was a great review of one of the urushi Nakaya in the Fountain Pen Reviews section, which is what makes me want one.

Isn't sanity really a one-trick pony, anyway? I mean, all you get is one trick, rational thinking! But when you're good and crazy . . . ooh hoo hoo hoo! . . . the sky's the limit!

For $500, I'd have to go for a black 51 DJ with gold-filled cap (9 grouped lines pattern). That is pretty much my dream pen. I promised myself that I'll buy one if I get into U Chicago or U Mich Law School - watch out credit card!

For moderns, I'd get an Aurora Optima if I didn't already have one.

I ordered an Edson from Pam at oscarbraunpens.com ($399) and it came today. It is beautiful, but will have to wait until Christmas to use it. (The blue carbonesque VP, however, is already inked and in my pocket.)

An infinite number of mathematicians walk into a bar.

The first orders a beer, the second half a beer, the third 1/4 of a beer...

The bartender says "You guys are a bunch of jerks!" and draws 2 beers.

I can't help it, I like this joke!

Two pens that I am lusting for but cannot afford are: the Graf von Faber Castell 2006 Pen of the Year and the Visconti Divine Proportion. Both are considerably more expensive than a mere $500! I have a number of pens worth as much as $700 each, but that is pretty much my limit. I would rather have several quite expensive pens than 2-3 very expensive ones.

I'd probably buy another Conway Stewart 100 in Black (or maybe the purple color that I can't name at the moment) and a Namiki Vanishing Point. Or maybe a few more Pelikans. Of course my list changes regularly.

I have a Pelikan 625 (my most expensive pen)

Pelikan 200

Pelikan 140

Several Esterbrooks

One 51, one 45, one 75, and a Sonnet

Several Safari's in various colors

A Sheaffer Legacy Heritage II, and Imperial III and a IV

Four Phileas

A Parafernalia Fountain Pen

A Bexley Submariner

A Conway Stewart Churchill (bought used so it was less expensive to me than the 625)

My wife is interested (as am I) in getting me a pen for Christmas.

I think that the Waterman Edson, Aurora 85th Anniversary and the Visconti Divine Proportion are beautiful pens, but the latter two are clearly out of my price (not dream) range. There are obviously several fine pen names that I don't have an example of. So, I ask, if you could spend about $500, what would you get?

I would be interested in the collective thoughts and ideas.

Thanks in advance.

I'd get a Nakaya Portable Writer in the Kuro-tamenuri finish:

[Photos from nibs.com, from whom I'd buy said pen.]

This will be my next big pen purchase.

Waterman Edson

Waterman Serenite

Sailor Profit 21 Cross Emperor (can be had for $500 in Japan)

Aurora Mare

I'll stop here before I find myself more ways to spend money.

How and where can you ever find a waterman serenite pen for under 500? I want to know :/

Fountain pens are like weapons. They just make your pocket bleed so much.

If I had $500 to get another pen, I would defiantly use it to buy a Stipula Etruria Cracked Ice 991 edition with a 1.1mm stub nib. It is a beautiful Italian pen with a smooth and springy 14k gold nib.

You can see it here at Pentime.com(I have no affiliation with this company)

Newbie here (disclaimer). But I have put together a nice collection in a short period of time, multiples of MB, Visconti, Lamy, and Pilot. I don't have a Pelikan, Esterbrook, Parker, Shaeffer, or Waterman though. But for your price range, adding a Visconti might be a different idea. I have a Maxi Homo Sapiens Bronze Age, and a Midi Homo Sapiens Steel Age. Both are outstanding pens, and come with their "Dreamtouch " nib. Just offering a different option.

This thread is now 7 years young. I'm guessing that even if he wants another pen for Xmas we are a rich too early

I hope he has invested the money properly: The Dow Jones Index has gained 28.7% (11461 to 14756) since opening of that thread, so by now we are talking about a pen in the $650 range.

So I'm opting for Nakaya and there should be some leftovers for personalizing it with a Zogan or Kanji or maybe even flex mod or whatever.

Go for it!

Or rather wait seven more years, then some other specialties will be in range, too.

Greetings,

Michael

Look at the orange Nakaya on the classifieds for 550.00 the pen is new and with the trim and customization it would cost you $830.00 from Nibs.com at the moment. I love piston fillers, but the nakaya feeds and nibs are so good I don't care that they are c/c. The finish is bulletproof and a joy to touch.
