Is the Boheme a girl's pen?

Hi,

My main fountain pen is a MB 146, but I also have a Bohème for carrying at weekends etc when I'd rather not carry a Meisterstück Le Grand.

I quite like its compact size when the nib is retracted and the way the thicker lid sits between my thumb and forefinger when the nib is out. However, I'm wondering whether it is in fact a women's pen. I have it in black/platinum with the black stone, as pictured below:

Opinions?

:W2FPN: In similar discussions about other pens, the majority consensus seems to be that pens don't have gender (although there was some discussion about whether there's an upper age limit for Hello Kitty themed pens). It's your pen; use it and enjoy it. Remember, the same silly people who are likely to give you any grief about a pen being "girly" are probably going to give you grief about using a fountain pen, so their opinions on such things have no value.

Edited to add that black with silver trim is about as gender-neutral as one can get.

I came here for the pictures and stayed for the conversation.

You're not allowed to keep girls in pens over here.;)

When you're good at it, it's really miserable.

I don't think it's a girls pen although I can understand the appeal from the fairer sex due to its compact size. I use mine (vert model) for business trips etc where all I need is a few cartridges with me.

I dont think the Boheme is a girl's pen though some pens definitely are, like the Montblanc Greta Garbo. Its so feminine it will make the manliest of hands seem effeminate. Another one girlie pen would be the cross Sauvage especially in the giraffe pattern.

Size isn't important. It's how you use it. Seriously, it doesn't appear to have any "girlie" lines or decor, looks quiet masculine to me. In fact, its overall design (except for the open nib) reminds me of Sheaffer's Pen For Men.

Seriously, it is how you use it... I once saw a movie in which Tom Sellic pulled a tiny (in his hands) 144 out of his pants pocket and started writing with it. It being feminine didn't cross my mind at all.

I got one for my sister on her birthday two years ago because of the compact size. However, I don't think it is a girl pen, to me it is just a small pen which I properly will not use that often.

Depending on the variant - gender neutral, feminine, and metrosexual.

I have the same color scheme, but in a RB and I love it. I frequently travel with it because of the more compact size, but the thicker barrel more like the 146. Also, I am a big fan of the cap of the pen. Unlike the more domed style caps the Boheme has a flat top cap that I prefer.

Everyone knows it was La Boheme...

Maybe the pen was made for tiny frozen hands.

When you're good at it, it's really miserable.

When I showed one of my younger brothers my 146, 149, and Boheme, he thought the Boheme was a perfect size, that the others were too large. He then asked if I would let him know if ever I decided to sell the pen. Whereupon his wife laughingly said to him, ...."that's a woman's pen! You don't want that! Look at it! It's so cute and dainty, it's just not a man's pen" My brother looked at me with a look of surprise, mouth open wide, but said nothing. His wife left the room and so did my brother, but not before he turned back to say, "Let me know". I don't think it's a woman's pen, but then I'm not sure what such a thing would be anyway.

May you and those you love, be always blessed with peace and never ending joy.

Yes it is!

But as long as no one sees you using it you should be ok.

Good luck

It's an evil plot to try and pry 149s away from women. Don't fall for it! :bunny01:

If the Boheme was a man's pen it wouldn't have a "crystal" on it and operate like a lipstick.

They did make the "big size" one which didn't have the crystal and would be the one I would get if I could find it. If anyone asked about the lipstick mechanism, I would say that if you twist it one way you get a nib and the other way gets you a screwdriver...

As far as I know, the lip-stick mechanism is a recreation of the old safety mechanism.

I love the Visconti version of this. But the Metropolis is big enough for real people's hands
