I really LOVE old-fashion systems! ;)

You might want to Google for a Senator President. The size, shape, and black resin resemble those of the MB 149. It is a piston filler and is available with either a gold or steel nib. They are frequently sold as promotional pens (lots of 5+) but don't let that turn you off.

 

I have one with a gold plated steel nib. It writes beautifully, holds a ton of ink, and the fit and finish are coparable to more expensive pens. If you are into that sort of thing, the wide cap band even has room to engrave your initials. Here's a link to Senator's web catalog:

The Lamy Nexx has a broader grip with less pronounced finger grip areas than the Safari.

 

The Platignum No. 5 Studio is also cheap with a fairly broad round section (~10mm)

If you like big, I have a Senator President that should be your cup of tea. For a price ranging from $70-90 USD, it is an outstanding pen. Measuring 146mm long and 14mm in diameter, it is a proper handful. Piston fill system. Somewhat scare.

Cuza, looks very interesting. I love piston fillers. So I'm being a bit lazy here, but I haven't seen these around the usual sales sights. Where would one find one of these for $70???

Uggh... just when I thought I had my pen buying under control this whole topic came up. I like big pens. I bought some cheap Pilot G2 roller balls at Staples today and wrote one page with the pen. My hand was so cramped from holding such a small pen, even though I didn't need to push hard. I then wrote two pages with a Montblanc 149 and it was incredibly comfortable. I don't have big hands, but I clearly prefer big pens.

 

I spent a bunch of time on the allwritenow website today and have concluded that a couple Varuna pens are in my future too. I also plan to pick up a Laban Mento from isellpens.com later. But for now my main quest was the Danitrio Cum Laude. I was the one who recommended that pen and I knew they were hard to find now as I believe they've been discontinued. Still I did find a good deal on them. So I ordered one today even though I totally promised myself I'd lay off buying pens for a while. It's called the "scarcity principle" - a perception of product scarcity pushes one to make rash and illogical purchasing decisions.

 

Any way, thanks a lot for the analysis. I agree with your choices and am going to follow suit also with acquiring these pens too.

Resulting in: A Varuna Green Mottled Gajendra "mirror" finish with a STUB German nib (they do the job in UK) should be coming "home" (hopefully soon)

So far, and this first time i heard of "allwritenow", Steve's explanations and ultra-fast answer to my questions were SUPERB :thumbup:

 

I will keep you informed once the thing made it "home"

Thanks man, good lead on that Senator. I did some more research though and found out that filling them with ink can be a real problem. Something about Senators being full of hot air.... :headsmack: Also, I guess that getting a Senator to actually work, and work right, can be nearly impossible.

Yep, another pen that I don't need....I wasn't interested in big pens, until now. Yep, another black pen. How odd, how I said, I don't want any black pens and have a lot of them. True many were the desk drawer inherited ones that sat for 15 years, before I became a pen nut.

Since then I've only bought 5 black pens. :embarrassed_smile:

      No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍

      I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎

      I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄

      Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen
