A true Burgundy … "Binder Burgundy" ... uh-huh

Recommended Posts

FWIW, I've contacted Diamine about doing my burgundy as a bespoke color. We shall see. (Gotta come up with a good name for it...)

Obviously, I should have added "unless Binder itself orders it from Diamine". Lol.

Thanks for the recipe Richard!

I mixed up my batch last eveing and tried it out. I like it, now to load some into a pen with a double broad italic to see the shading. I'll see if I cannot take a photo of MB Burgundy, Noodler's Burgundy, Yama Budo and Binder's Burgundy today and post in this thread. Paper was Rhodia BLOC #16.

Shot with diffused flash using flash white balance - JPEG HR, cropped. For those of you who know color correction, the gray desktop at the bottom of the image is pretty neutral, so you can copy the image into a photo processor and process it for white balance and see a truer color.

Parker BB italic was dipped for this demonstration. Seems the Sheaffer Red is coming through under stromg illumination, but is not apparent in reality (JPEG gamut and/or compression limits perhaps)

YES, YES, YES !!!! Thanks Richard!!! If my monitor is true, this is the color I've been agonizing over for months. Never would have thought of Richard's recipe. So far the closest is Diamine Monaco Red. I accidently dipped an M800 which had a trace of PR Sherwood Green (remaining after cleaning) into Monaco Red and came close. Who would have guessed green would add the shading? Now I have a project for this weekend, and my wife's "honey-do's" are on hold again. Off to an ink quest!! If only Richard's formula were "eternal" or "bulletproof".

Years ago Conway Stewart made a burgundy ink that looked a lot (to my eye) like Richard's Waterman-Sheaffer mix--at least as far as I can tell from my computer monitor. I kept a couple of drops of the CS ink and have been looking for something close to it since it went out of production. I will mix up some of the Binder Burgundy and see if it fits the bill. If so, :cloud9: :cloud9: :cloud9:.

Gonzo: If you have Diamine Monaco Red or Noodler's Tiananmen that would be interesting to add to the "mix" of samples. I've been experimenting with those two colors as well.

And thanks for the white balance tip!!

NY - Sorry, no can do, don't have 'em.

By far the easiest tool for this is Adobe Lightroom

Since Richard's recipe calls for Slovenian Skrip red I have a question for the ink gurus on the forum: I have a bottle of vintage Skrip permanent red. How does that compare to the Slovenian red?

Well, if you go with Binder Burgundy, then you can add a sequel: a true blue ... Binder Blue to give us the cool color your FPN signature heralds. Just a thought from the ...instigator.cool.gif

Yeah, now that you mention it...Richard, what is that BBB (Beautiful Binder Blue) in your sig? :notworthy1::notworthy1:

If Diamine makes this, I can't think of a more appropriate name than Binder's Burgundy. God know's you deserve it with all you have contributed.

With the new FPN rules, now I REALLY don't know what to put in my signature.

We're not able to carry inks for sale...

Out of curiosity, why are you not able to carry inks for sale?

My apologies, I misstated. It's not a matter of "not able" but rather of "not willing." Like all businesses, we have to make choices as to what we feel best suits our strengths. Barbara and I run RichardsPens.com from our home, with the help of two part-time employees. We sell new pens, testing and adjusting each and every one before it goes out the door, and we sell a few tools and accessories. I'm very passionate about repair and restoration. We go to shows because we enjoy them and because we see shows as a bully pulpit to spread the Gospel of the Well-Adjusted Pen. These various things all take time. Selling ink is a costly proposition in terms of the time it takes. We simply don't want to commit the time to that additional load.

Ps. A "bully pulpit" is not a pulpit for bullies. The expression comes from Teddy Roosevelt, who used the word "bully" to mean "very good." A bully pulpit is simply a very good position from which to spread whatever one views as "the gospel."

At least give us a hint if it is another custom mix, or a regular brand. Hell, I may even have the blue.

It's actually Photoshop Blue, but if you like it, you can try Diamine Royal Blue. :)

Hoya, friends. It's very possible that this is only an issue with my batch, but I made this ink a few days ago and I'm beginning to notice problems. It was working beautifully in my Falcon for about four fifths of the charge and then started choking in a big way (priming didn't help). Also, I'm noticing strange behaviour in the ink bottle itself: the ink normally runs very quickly off the glass except for where it's been sitting in the lower half of the bottle, making me think that perhaps a film or precipitate is forming. Agitating the bottle can shift it gradually, but it's pretty tenacious.

Is anyone else who's had the ink sitting for about four days noticing the same sort of behaviour, or is it just me?

My bottle was mixed a couple of weeks before the Atlanta show, now a month at least ago, and it's still behaving the way it did at first.

I've been using it for a few days now without issue. There's nothing odd in the little bottle I keep the mixed ink in, either.

No problems since I mixed it up, either in the pen or the small screw-top plastic tube I keep it in. Sounds like you have a contaminant and should start over.
