Starwalker Midnight Black Metal

Yesterday I purchased the new Starwalker Midnight Black Metal with a medium nib at the Montblanc store in Nice (France). I walked into the store and asked "Please, may I see the Starwalker Midnight" and the lady answers "How did you now about this pen?" to which I could have answered "Because you have it on the front of the store" but instead I opted for the more polite "I knew about it on the internet". She was surprised because the pen hit the stores on April 1st. and it is not even on the official webpage.

After checking the pen I asked if they had it with Fine nib but they didn't since "It is a brand new model". They actually had only one piece.

I went then for the new ink. The lady says first they had Oyster Grey, Burgundy Red and Purple but when she comes back she said they were out of Oyster Grey but offers the M. Ghandi Saffron ink which, without hesitation, I took. At the cashier, while I was paying, she approaches me and says "Here is a present for my mistake before when I said we had the Oyster Grey"... and she handles to me a bottle of BRG!!!! (The last bottle of the store). I think, besides wanting to have a kind atention they were going to get rid of the left stock of old inks.

The anecdote (if the free RBG is not enough) is that when I was with the boxes on the store's desk just about to pay the manager comes and says "You won't be able to use these inks in this FP" (with a sad face) to what I asked "WHY?". "Because it don't accept converters." he said. "Well it may not accept YOUR converters but there are many brands that produce international standard converters" was my comment. "Ok, but we don't sell them here." was his final statement before turning around and walk away. :clap1:

BTW, at the store they had the 241 edition of Ghandi FP at a bargain price of EUR 17.000... it was the 237/241 number.

That sounds like a very happy experience, congrats! You must be the first here to get this pen. Photos would be great if you can.

Enjoy your new pen.

Looks like a black starwalker doue. Is it comfortable to write with?

The barrel and cap surfacers are like the doue but since the treatment is different it feels like another kind of pen. The most surprising detail (not fully clear in the pictures I have saw on the internet) is that all the "platinum" parts are not shinning but opaque. According to the lady of the store they did some PVD treatment to get this result.

Great pen! I have the Starwalker Duoé which is one of my best writers ("M" nib).

And I saw the new Starwalker design on April 1st in the Strasbourg boutique as well.

Unfortunately I didn't spend that much time there to take a closer look at it.

My initial impression was that the metal parts looked much lighter in color compared to the above posted picture; clip and nib were not as dark as shown above. Also I thought that clip and nib are still shiny and not matte ?! So do you mean "matte" (compared to glossy/shiny) by "opaque"? I realy like to see a competative picture of this pen.

...but maybe that was because of the boutiques awful lightning in their glass cases....I'm always blinded by hundreds of reflections there...

Enjoy your new pen!

Michael

PS: What kind of nib did you get? I always want to try out a "F" or "EF" Starwalker nib.

Is it comfortable to write with? Do you write with the cap on the end or off?

Thanx

Because of what I'm used to, I never put the cap at the end, but as with other Starwalkers the cap is light and do nor affect the balance of the pen significantly.

That's the word, it is all matte (it is "mate" in Spanish but I didn't know how t translate it). The nib and the clip are matte and depending on the light it has it may seem more shinny than in the picture but without direct light it is clearly what they have done (a PVD coating according to the lady at the store). It is "M" but because it was the only one at the store. My Doue is EF and I would have choose one F for the Midnight if it were available.

One thing that called my attention is that the box is not the standard rectangular of the Starwalker but a squared one like the box of a 149. It was labeled correctly by Montblanc so they used the box in which the pen was received.

How are the F and EF Starwalker nibs? Are they true fine and extra fine nibs?

I would be interested in getting another Starwalker one day and would choose either one.

Cheers

Hi Michael,

As MB nibs are hand finished there is no exact (outlined exact) correlation between the size of the nib and how it writes, so you can end up with an F or EF that are not "really" F or EF.

I have a Faulkner M and it is wider than the Starwalker M when writing (in this case the type of nib is different too). The Starwalker EF is really thin without scratching the paper. Nice FP. Do not know a Starwalker F per personal experience of regular use, but as a reference my Mann F is the best writer I have in a selection of more than 15 FPs (GvFC, MB, Chopard, Porsche, Stipula, Tombow, Lamy, Rotring) all EF,F and M. Lamy and Rotring are thinner than MB which tend (at least in my experience) to be more wet writers than other brands.

Bottom line: Try each when you decide to get one.

 ...well said!

I know that each nib runs differently but I've heard from more than one person that the Starwalker EF write pretty fine which is a good thing.

Your comment does encourage me to try one.

Many thanks for your reply

Michael
