149 Demonstrator pictures
What a stunning pen. It looks remarkably clean, and the piston looks new.
Do all 149s have the sealant, and is removing the feed and re-sealing a job only for a professional? Looking at the piston on this demonstrator, I wonder why a solid silicon gasket/washer or O-ring system wasn't used to seal the feed/section, instead of what appears to be a malleable paste. The piston head, which moves, as well as seals, is doing a perfect job in this beautiful pen.
Thank you Multiechelon, Sean, for the enlightening photos. It's interesting to see how the gold cap rings are held in place, and what a gorgeous nib.
That MB sealant is horrible! They put this stuff in all threads, which bothers if you want to unscrew the nibs and it's aesthetically ugly, particularly if used into an awesome demo pen like that. I will not say that ruin the beauty of this pen, but this stuff makes the section seems weird, aesthetically unpleasant. I prefer use the old nice silicone grease into my 146 and 149. Easy to unscrew the nibs, when you need and works perfectly.

Thanks to Jeremy(shrinknib) for the tip. I will be joining this club very soon. It does put off getting the watch I want until next year but will be so worth it.

You are ever so welcome

I think you need to thank your wife- she sounds magnificent.

Yes Jeremy, my wife is a rare jewel. Yesterday when I talked to the boutique that was handling my Shaw for a nib exchange I asked if they had the Hitchcock ink yet. They did so I told them to hold a bottle with my Shaw. When I told the wife she asked if they had the Hitchcock pen and I said I did not ask. Her reply was for me to call back and if they had it buy it. After picking my jaw up off the floor I did just that. So now I have two fantastic new pens coming and my Shaw back with an OBB nib. Needless to say I am one happy camper right now.

As for the watch, the one I want costs about five times the price of the Hitchcock. We talked about it and decided to wait until next year for that. This is the watch I want, http://www.ebay.com/itm/Panerai-PAM-382-BRONZO-Luminor-1950-Submersible-3-Days-Automatic-47mm-Bronze-/250958867499?pt=Wristwatches&hash=item3a6e506c2b:puddle: :puddle: :puddle:

That would be beautiful!

Apparently patience is a virtue.

I don't believe it!!

Get the watch sooner rather than later

Now ... if only I had a wife like that!

Oh the vagaries of life...

Some very nice pens and watches in this thread! Although I quite like IWC and Panerai watches (don't own one though) ... the eBay one isn't my thing ... but that's just personal taste. A watch is something you always wear and use and appreciate. So if your budget (and wife) allows ... go for it!

In Rotation: MB 146 (EF), Noodler's Ahab bumblebee, Edison Pearl (F), Sailor ProGear (N-MF)

In storage: MB 149 (18k EF), TWSBI 540 (B), ST Dupont Olympio XL (EF), MB Dumas (B stub), Waterman Preface (ST), Edison Pearl (0.5mm CI), Noodler's Ahab clear, Pilot VP (M), Danitrio Densho (F), Aurora Optima (F), Lamy 2000 (F), Visconti Homo Sapiens (stub)

sorry for the OT:

I'm not comfortable buying that much on ebay, how big is the difference in price if you buy directly from an AD?

and how did you let your wife agree? :)

Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing

When I buy the watch it will be from an AD. That was just put up as a reference. If I could get the watch for msrp it would be about half what the ebay price is. I have found nowhere that has it for even close to what it is supposed to sell for. The story I've gotten was that it sold out before it was released and what is available is from dealers who are marking it up.

My wife is a collector as much as I am. She has a huge assortment of handbags and jewelry. For me it's pens and watches. She is the best!

I have a reason to update this thread. It is not the purchase of another demonstrator but one of the demonstrators in this thread has come back to me. I sent it to Niksch to have the pink sealant replaced with clear sealant and this afternoon I got the exciting news that it was home. This is the B nib pen:

It was nice to ink it back up with J Herbin Vert Empire. I have missed using that ink:

Jeremy, for a few months I have been down to four pens but with this demonstrator coming back and a new 149 acquisition I should be at six for the foreseeable future. I can't find two of my 149 stands so I need to go shopping. Here is the current collection:

:puddle: I have just got to get myself one of these, and perhaps a 146 Demo, and of course I have to try and find a way of grabbing rocksypder's 139 Demo, when he isn't looking. B).

Love what Eric has done with the sealant on Multiechelon's pen, enabling the end of that fantastic nib to be shown. A really super feature to look at.

Great photos Multiechelon. Thank you very much for sharing.

Hey Sean

I am glad Eric got that pen back to you safe and sound.

he looks to have done a wonderful job.

The nib on that pen looks as brilliant as the pen itself I think- how does it write?

It fascinates me that even with the sealant, the ink still finds its way into the section part!

My demo has a small problem that it has insufficient sealant (of the pink variety) and ink is starting to wander out of the threads.. not ideal.

Is the pen you have received back the same as mine- in terms of age?

Max has been unwilling to unscrew it for fear of cracking the section... so I am a bit stuck, where I was using this pen every day.

I like the clear sealant, and think maybe a trip somewhere for my beloved may do the trick.

I like the six pen set-up- demo bookends and the Hemi and 149 in between (or is it a YOTGD??).

I really need to reconsider my pen stock.. (maybe 50 pens too many?? :roflmho: )

Why did I see this post?! I totally ignored the existence of a demonstrator 149, and life was great! :)

Now I'll have to get one!

Great pens, enjoy them!

In comparing the two pens, there are some interesting small differences between the pens. The most obvious are the nibs. The EF is a 14K and the B is an 18C:

I don't know the exact terminology but the major difference is how the nib and feed connect to the barrel. I will appeal to the scientific terminology "thick" and "thin" to differentiate the two:

Sean

hi,

it is interesting to note that in one of the demonstrators the nib feed assembly is connected to the barrel with a transparent connector(for broad nib) and with a black connector (for fine nib)in the other. they don't actually vary in thickness. a groove in the transparent connector, looks black from the side. i hope i am not mistaken.

Hi Jeremy,

The EF nib demonstrator is still in my daily rotation. It sits in a 149 pen stand filled with J. Herbin Rose Tendresse. I reach for that pen all the time.

At some point sooner than later, I am going to sell the B nib demonstrator. The nib is lovely (and of course the 149 form factor is my favorite) but the line is lays down is just too thick for my taste. For a little while, I was using it for special projects (like when I would first begin a writing project) but a different subtle change in my rotation made me reconsider this use. A few months ago, I added two Pelikan M200 demonstrators to my rotation. I primarily carry them with me but sometimes I carry one of them and a 149; it depends on the task. With the addition of those two pens, I did not have a need for five 149s on my desk. So I cleaned out the B nib demonstrator and it is sitting on a shelf. Now I just need to get around to listing it.

And it will be gone in a heartbeat as many of us consider there is no such thing as too wide of an MB nib.
