149 Demonstrator pictures

Hi all,

I am happy to report that I again have a reason to update this thread. With the exception of one Hemingway (and one Agatha which is at MB getting its nib swapped to a B ) I have been writing with 149s. I have experimented with a few different 149s (which will be the topic of another post) but I really enjoy the demonstrator version. I thought I had found two more. One of them fell through but I am happy to share pictures of the one that arrived today. Here it is uninked sandwiched between the 14K EF (on left) and 18C B (on right). It is an 18K M (in the middle):

And some successive shots:

This new demonstrator does not have all the metal of the other two demonstrators. While this one has black end caps, the seller explained to me that MB used it to test inks (and their flow in the pen) so it has less adornments. This is most noticeable in the cap:

But can be seen by carefully inspecting the pen itself:

Before seeing this pen, I was getting attached to the pink goop in the other two demonstrators. Now that I see this one, I may have to revise my opinion:

Although I'll miss the 'bed of Hemingways' pictures, I must say that a 'bed of 149 Demonstrators' is a good substitute :puddle:

Nice work Sean and thanks for sharing such great pictures. Hopefully I'll see one or two of these in person sometime in August!

Thanks Tim. That picture is a favorite of mine. In a similar spirit, here are the demonstrators on a bed of 75th Anniversary 149 LEs :

Jasam, there are a few other threads on MB demonstrators, but in general I don't think much is known about them. (i.e., how many were made, were they given to people outside MB, etc.)

Right when I decide I can hold off on getting another pen, I run across this thread again!

Man, the demonstrator model looks really cool! I have always liked them and seeing the 149 demo really makes me want one. Nice collection, guy I gotta save my change!

Sean has virtually the same taste as myself in the 149. I both dread and look forward to his posts because I know it's going to be something uber sweet.

May I ask what is the estimate price of one of this babies? :notworthy1:

I don't know who'd even sell you a demonstator (most guys that have them guard them with fervour). Sean is an avid collector well plugged into the Montblanc scene however.

But the 75th annys with mop (LE) command around USD 2500[ish] depending on just how mint it is (and what it comes with - papers, boxes etc).

trojan_four's summary is accurate. 75th Anniversary 149 LEs sell for $2500 plus or minus 10%. The market for demonstrators is far less liquid so I don't know how to estimate a fair price. They are certainly in the same ballpark as the 75th Anniversary 149 LE, if not a bit more expensive.

Sean,

Great to see you are using the demos. How do you carry these pens? In your breast pocket? Do you notice any condensation in the cap? I ask because I believe at least part of the reason for making them was to evaulate them for condensation build up in the cap.

I usually only carry one or two pens with me at a time. When I only carry one or two pens, I use MB Florentine cases:

It might be a little hard to see in the picture, but I stuffed a small piece of foam into the bottom of each case so that the pen does not bounce around:

I bike to work and before I put the foam in I would sometimes get to work and find quite a mess with ink all over the cap; that never happens with the foam in the tube. For the rare situations where I need more than two pens, I carry my pens in a Venlo five-pen case. I love the venlo case. The 149s are a snug fit but there is also enough space to quickly move pens in and out:

(and this is an older picture, with some pens I no longer own)

I have never had any condensation issues with my pens. And I think I use them pretty hard.

That's interesting. I often carry a 149 in my shirt pocket, and I do get condensation in the cap, especially on hotter days.

When I carry it in my pen case, I don't get the condensation.

I can totally believe the case makes the difference. During the day I will bring a pen with me most places but it still says in the Florentine case. That is why I like those cases so much. I just carry one in a pants pocket and I don't have a problem.
