Makeshift inkwell

Okay, I know it's crude but this is how I entertained myself while my husband was getting a few things at the hardware store. The price: approx. $3.25. When corked it's 2-3/4" high and 1-3/4" wide at the base, plus it seems stable.

Alright, that's pretty cool. Now I'm going to have to stop at the Big Box store on my next shopping weekend -- that's a big step up from the candle holder I'm using now, if only because I can keep the ink in the well, and just cork it, instead of having to pour the ink back and clean the well after every use.

Can you tell me the nominal pipe size of the plug you used? I'd guess it's 1" or 1 1/4" Schedule 40 -- can you confirm, or else just measure the inside diameter?

Does not always write loving messages.

Does not always foot up columns correctly.

Does not always sign big checks.

Thinking outside the box ... how cool is that!!!! Ron Zorn should love it, too. Thanks for sharing your idea and starting a new trend in fountain pen accessories. It's great! :D

INGENIOUS!!! I'm very glad to know I'm not the only one who sees pen paraphernalia everywhere I go.....as often as I go to Home Depot, no doubt I'll be looking for makeshift inkwells every time I go now. Thank you for a hearty laugh! :roflmho:

Be sure to check out lamtheandyman's makeshift pen holder click here. Spring has sprung and the FP afficionados are building nests for their pens and inks.

Be sure to check out lamtheandyman's (4/1, 7:53 am) makeshift pen holder built with materials from Lowe's. Spring has sprung and the FP afficionados are building nests for their pens and inks.

(Will someone teach me how to insert url's?? Please??)

When you're in edit/writing mode the button to the right of the smiley face :) is the insert link button.

Neat! That's a PVC plug, right? I wonder if you could get one of the threaded caps to fit over the plug. A little silicone grease and you could have a watertight seal. :hmm1:

That's a great idea. I never thought to look for fitted caps for it. The part is a PVC something -- it was in the plumbing section.

Hmmm... now I'm tempted to swing by a hardware store on the way home.

I've also used small copper plumbing caps as tiny inkwells and to repair old inkwells that are missing their ink pot. In that case you generally need a plumbing cap plus an O ring.

That's neat, too. When you use them as tiny inkwells, what do you use as the lid? Another cap?

I leave them open. My metallic dip pen ink (which is homemade too, by the way) is made up of fine metallic particles so if a little dust got in you'd never notice. They dry out like a watercolor cake and you add water as needed.

It's 1¼" diameter.
