Complete List of Waterproof Inks

Recommended Posts

Another waterproof and very permanent ink I love (one that is known more in calligraphy circles) is Magic Color, which is made in England. Paper & Ink Arts sells it. It is safe for fountain pens.

An acrylic ink in a fountain pen? Wow. I'd sure test it in some cheap ones first. It's hard to imagine that not clogging.

Been using it for years in a Rotring Artpen without problems.

Find my homemade ink recipes on my Flickr page here.

I think we need a wiki where we can document this sort of thing more permanently, and in a way that's more findable.

Here are a few more random inks that are water-resistant (ran under tap water for ~5 seconds, let dry): ....

That method tests for what happens when you accidentally spill something on what you've written and can wipe it up or dry it off right away.

There are also times when the writing gets soaked for a while. I once left a journal open by a window and when it rained the journal was left exposed to a pretty good amount of rain water for quite a long time. I've also had things in a bag get wet and stay wet for hours at a time.

A long soak simulates these disasters. I've found some inks to endure a fast splash of water decently but disappear from the paper all together after a soak.

On a sacred quest for the perfect blue ink mixture!

about the Sailor inks being water resistant, may I ask which line of the Sailor inks you mean? I was looking at the writingdesk, and there are a couple of different types of sailor inks:

sei boku

kiwa guro

summer

winter

spring

jentle

which one would be the one you meant?

the kiwa guro 'nano black' seems to be the one of two blacks, so I'm guessing it's the one, but just wanted to be sure.

Will they be fine on a lamy safari nib?

I'd like to add Diamine Majestic blue to this compilation. Not only is a very pretty dark cobalt blue, but it is somewhat water-resistant. Most of ot washes out, but the text is legible after submersing it on water for 10 minutes or putting the paper under the running tap.

whereas a spill (rather than a wash) will leave the text pretty much unreadable. this highlights a problem with a list of waterproof inks: people's definitions vary a lot.

Well then you would have to wash the paper after the spill :headsmack:

But you are right. That's why I only wrote "it is somewhat water-resistant".

I'd class it as "not at all water resistant, but leaves a bit of a stain if you wash the heck out of it". When I evaluate water resistance I'm usually thinking of things like spilled drinks or "caught in the rain with water wicking in at the edge" rather than "one minute under running water". Having to rely on washing the paper thoroughly without damaging it by washing it too much is more voodoo than I'm interested in for real-world situations. Poussiere de Lune is a similar case: a little water and it's an unreadable purple blob. Wash the heck out of it and you still have a bit of a line, which may or may not be legible depending on how small you write (because it will have spread a bit in the water).

OK. Can we call it "water stubborn"?. The "leaves a bit of a stain if you wash the heck out of it" should have a name! :roflmho:

Sailor Kiwaguro and Sei-Boku are both pretty much waterproof. I've had each in Pelikans for months at a time without the slightest problem; in fact, they've both been exemplary inks in their use.

Kaweco blue-black seems pretty waterproof. I ran it under the faucet for 15 seconds and then tried to wipe it away with my thumb and it didn't budge. Yay!

. . . ... So yeah... has anyone actually tried Pelikan Black? Is it worth adding to the list? (Or would the Pelikan Black mentioned in Clarks actually be Pelikan Font India, which is in the waterproof list already?)

Pelican and some others have so many different inks called India it would clarify things a lot if the serial number of the particular ink were used. Especially true when they change the formula and put it out with a different number.

Add Cross Black to the list as a good water resistent ink. I just ran a page written in Cross Black through the wash and the words remained very legible and most of the black dye left intact.

As Pelikan makes the inks for Cross, I would think Pelikan Black would have the same water resistent qualities.

Reviving this older thread to add: Noodler's 54th Massachusetts! Some water dripped onto my journal and the ink didn't even bat an eyelash.

I hope this hasn't been mentioned already (I did check and don't think I missed it). Surely there must be more waterproof inks to add to this thread by now! :D

About Noodler's inks, I definitely would add Rome Burning to the list. This is a very, vey permanent ink. This is a strange ink. It is dark chestnut color in the bottle and when it touches the paper, bur very quickly dries to a an olive-chestnut lighter color. When immersed in water, or rinsed, for some minutes, the yellow washes competely out and a permanent purple remains on the page. I do not know of any other permanent ink that so completely changes color when soaked or rinsed.
