fountain pen taboos - don't enter if you're easily offended

That's what I thought, no substantive commentary about ink capacity...only conjecture from a "robert allen" who has not given any basis for his 146 or 149 ink capacities.

It's one thing to reference an FPN post as a source, it's quite another to reference AS A FACT a post with only conjecture as its basis.

"Con-20 Con-50 vs cartridges" thread, Pens from the Land of the Rising Sun-Subcategory

And he is very close to what I measured myself, so close, I do not even wanna look it up now, it's close to 6:20 in the morning, been up all night.

So, byebye, I am hitting the hay... no need for being rushed or causing distress.....

"Actually, I prefer the CON-70 vacuum-filled converter. It holds more ink than some dedicated piston-filled pens (1.1cc of ink! A Pilot cartridge holds 0.89cc and a Custom 823 pen holds 1.59cc--more than any piston-filled fp on the market). Of course, the CON-70 won't fit in the Capless/Vanishing Point models, but it's great in my Custom 74 pens. In all but my vintage Capless pens, I prefer the CON-50 since I can easily see how much ink is in the converter plus I can see the color (if I forget which pen has what).

BTW, a Pelikan M800 holds 1.22cc of ink and, surprisingly, an M1000 holds 1.02cc. An MB149 holds 1.32cc and the 146 holds 1.32cc! So one can cc, I mean see, that the CON-70 holds a lot for a converter. Unfortunately, Pilot doesn't get much attention for this design--but it should.

Oh, yes, almost forgot, the CON-50 holds 0.81cc and the CON-20 holds much less, but I don't have an actual measurement. Someone should check with a graduated syringe.

Cheers, Robert "

And what grounds does this "niksch" entity have to say that those figures are conjecture? Shumi no bunbogubako is a respectable publication -- and MB-friendly as well.

I measured 1.5ml for the Pelikan m800 and around 2ml for the vintage Pelikan 400. The quoted figures therefore sound entirely reasonable to me. The Hoink reports similar figures, and various other Google-able beings have measured similarly similar amounts.

Usenet discussion, with capacity measurements

mb146, Pelikan capacity measured by Japanese user

Ink capacity is fairly meaningless anyway. A pen with less capacity may very well write more words than a pen with a larger capacity. See Frank Dubiel's write out tests of various pens.

I love the boxes, but I'm not quite sure why since they never do anything but sit around and take up space.

not all boxes just take up space:

Buying an oblique nib for the sole reason of line variation.

I think the Pilot/Namiki Vanishing Point is way over-rated.

People that feel as though they have any right to make assumptions as to why someone else buys any particular, brand or style

of pen.

Mind your own business and don't worry about what others do.

I think the post that 'rants' "Oh that <brand> is only for people that want to show off."

Displays for the world your jealousies, feelings of inadequacy and maybe you have a small pen?

What one person thinks of another person's pen is completely immaterial to any meaningful discussion.

Buy what YOU want. Love what YOU love. Write with the pen YOU want.

For whatever reason, YOU want.

Stop trying to get in the head of someone else.

It seems to me it is more about the naysayer's HUGE ego than the person that owns said pen.

I do not own any MBs for the proverbial record.

OK now I'm going to finish my coffee.

Probably have to come back and edit this to make it remotely coherent.

The Parker Sonnet is my biggest FP taboo. I got mine quite cheaply at £35.00 but this is still about £30.00 to much. Shame on you Parker, this pen is no better than those metal Chinese cheapies one can get on Ebay for a fiver. Why do pen manufactures have this obsession with foisting more and more painted metal (lacquered in their language) pens on us. One drop and the pen is cosmetically ruined....perhaps that´s the idea?

My other taboo is rubberised sections, why when fountain pens work comfortably and well using resin or metal sections do pen manufacturers think we need nasty rubber finished ones that will perish and look awful in years to come, perhaps this too is done so people will need to buy new pens in the future?

... however for those with larger hands the choices are few mb149 , m1000, king of pens and emperor....... did i miss any

Yep, you missed the Bexley Poseidon and Poseidon Magnum. Same width as the M1000 but sweet writers that you can actually carry in nearly any pocket...at least any pocket I have.

Pen........................Barrel Width................Section Width

Poseidon.................0.54...........................0.467

Poseidon Magnum...0.56 (or 0.58?)...........0.46

M1000....................0.56...........................0.46

MB 149...................0.59...........................0.51

3.) When FPs and bling meet. A fountain pen must be functional and aesthetically pleasing. When diamonds and other such gem stones are included the functionality completely goes down the crapper, it's a piece of jewellery with a nib on one end.

Whats up with a bit of bling ??

A few gripes:

1. Pelikan design. I love my M215, but a lot of their more expensive models just look like a bigger version of the cheaper pens. Surely they can come up with a new/different design.

2. Garish looking blingy pens are really not my cup of tea. For example, the pens by Henry Simpole are impressive pieces of craftsmanship, but I wouldn't want to be seen writing with one. The 'lead carrot' description was quite funny.

3. Noodler's inks. I like using Noodler's, but is there any reason to have that many colours? Some of them just look the same.

4. Really thick, chunky pens. I feel like I'm writing with something designed for Shrek.

5. Fine nibs. To me, they make my writing look like it's been done by a rollerball.

6. Dry or slightly less wet nibs. I prefer my fountain pens to run wet and smooth.

Notwithstanding the above, to each his own I say! :D

<rant on>

This morning I chose a Montblanc 149 for the day and then stopped at a gas station. After the third try to complete skipping characters in the gas log, I realized that the heap of a car at the next pump probably cost less than the pen BUT PERFORMED MUCH BETTER!

When I got to the office, I swapped the 149 out for a Pelikan M800 that has never failed me.

</rant off)

Bill

I have a MB rollerball that writes flawlessly, now that I've replaced the refill with a Rotring. I went through about 6 or 7 new, fresh, pristine MB RB refills (bought from different stores, at different times, etc.) that all uniformly sucked big time. Every one. So, I've given up. But, maybe that was just my really bad luck. If that pen wasn't a gift, I would have returned it for sure.

I hate my MB rollerball. It skips and squeaks.

Find a different refill. I personally love the Rotring refills. It just took a tiny hack to make it fit (I just had to shave a bit of the plastic off the end of the refill so more of the tip would extend out of the pen. Took 20 seconds and it writes like a charm. There are other brands of refills, of course, that will fit with no hack necessary. I kind of took the difficult route...

the only thing i'll add is this thread's aim is to let out what irks you, of getting something off of your chest. nothing wrong with that as long as you don't focus on an individual but in general. of course take all opinions with a grain of salt unless they make sense to you.

I'd like to point out that I never said everybody who owns a MB has it for status. If I actually liked the designs of their pens and if they were as good as people who like them say they are, I'd happily use one myself. I just don't like the look or feel of them and that's a matter of personal taste. I'm sure many people own them because they like them and they're good pens. It just irks me when I see people showing off any object they don't use or appreciate just because it's a brand that will impress. We all make judgements whether we mean to or not. In the end people can do what they want for whatever reason they want, and I can feel about that any way I want. It doesn't stop me from appreciating the pens I like and it doesn't stop them from doing what they like. And I will not let my initial judgement of someone define that person for me there and then forever because I know first impressions are often very far from the truth.

Bushido: I'm sure the staff at MB boutiques are very helpful and knowledgeable about the products they sell. I was merely complaining about the lack of training sales staff at general pen counters in department stores often seem to receive nowadays.

I'm sorry if my post offended anyone, it was not written with that intent, I was just having a sleep-deprived hypomanic rant. And no the subject of it isn't what keeps me awake at night ;)

My thoughts:

-- I happen to like cheap Chinese pens. Heck, out of my entire collection, I've had the Preppy (Japanese "disposable") for the longest of any of my other pens. I understand the argument of having one/few good pens over a bunch of cheap hit-and-miss pens, but I personally like to experiment and whatnot. As long as I could get more hits over misses, I'm definitely happy that I could get a good rotation going.

-- I think the Lamy Safari line looks pretty awesome. It stands out. :) Of course, I'll only take that around to school and one of my jobs; the other jobs (in my opinion) seem too "sophisticated" for my little Vista, especially since it's filled with green ink. :P

-- I think that the Vista will be the most that I will spend on a pen though... Possibly a Prera one of these days, but I'm just too afraid to buy anything any more expensive than that. I've other hobbies (photography, sports, crafts, science...) so I don't really see myself spending too much on this obsession.

-- Moo

Ok,

1) People that do NOT capitalize anywhere in their post, especially the lone I.

2) People who confuse 'stationary' with stationery.

3) People who..wait a minute..oh, goodness, I thought the topic was Fountain Pen USER taboos..my mistake.

Oh, I did some research on fude, here's the definition: a bitter, continuous hostility, esp. between two families, clans, etc., often lasting for many years or generations.

WAIT, wait..I seem to have confused my Eastern Dictionary with my Southeastern (US) Dictionary..sorry, sorry.

Just ignore this post, I'm off to schedule an eye appointment......if I can find the phone.

no offense taken at all, are you kidding me? that's the point of this entire thread and if anyone has issues with that, well that's his or her problem.

i know what you mean about people buying pens to show off. that's prob why i don't buy more montblancs because i don't want to give the wrong impression but few can deny the quality of their pens, esp the smoothness of their nibs. that goes with other products as well. i would love to buy a rolex but bought a seiko instead, even though the seiko i have costs as much as most rolexes (yes there are a few seikos [ones with springdrive] that expensive!) because i don't want to draw attention yet still have the self-satisfaction of knowing i own a quality piece. i'm a huge namiki fan and their pens aren't as flashy and much fewer people in the general population know about namikis. they would think i paid much more for a snow-capped le grand montblanc than a big namiki with 'japanese drawings' when in fact the opposite is true. quality is usually found in well-known luxury items; it's a double-edge sword. then again i would be naive to dispute there are many who buy montblancs to show off. personally i hope they go away since they give other owners a bad name. but there's no law for being shallow and pretentious.
