Wanting lamy italic nib - can anyone post samples of 1.1 vs 1.5 please?

Hello all and greetings from England.

Bought my 1st FP; a Lamy Vista. I love it! Using Noodler's Air Corp and am very impressed. I can't wait for it to finish so I can experiment more and find my 'signature ink' colour. I work in the hospital, so am bound to black ink (or thereabouts ;) for legal reasons when writing in patients' notes)

I bought the Fine nib and its perfect.

I want an italic nib now. Yes, I think you guys have given me the bug!

I was hoping someone would be kind enough to post sample pics of handwriting with the 1.1 vs 1.5 nibs so I can decide if the 1.5 is too broad?

Thanks,

AS I currently have neither scanner nor camera functioning, I can't post pics/scans. What I can say is that the 1.1 is pretty much equivalent to a medium italic on a Duofold or Sonnet, and the 1.5 is more like a double broad italic.

Both are great, and both have their place. If your natural writing is small, the the 1.5 is not an everyday nib for you.

But the beauty of the Lamy nib is the price. Go on, buy both, buy that second pen and have both ready all the time. You know you are just looking for an excuse to do so

Hi,

Here's some samples, which are self-described.

I used MB BlBk ink, which has a fairly tight line, and HP Laser paper, which is not prone to feathering. With those two considerations, I think the attached samples are accurate as can be on-the-fly.

The measured lines are included to allow one to scale the samples with some accuracy.

I found in practice that the 1.1 nib on a Safari is quite nice for my hand. As mentioned, it generates a 0.7mm line. I also have a magnificent 0.8 Cursive Italic from the well-regarded Richard Binder, which is certainly a step or 2 up from these inexpensive pens/nibs.

Also, the feed on the Safari cannot keep-up with my writing speed: over 1 page, the density of ink starts to diminish. Bah! Short notes, Greeting Cards, petit billet doux are OK. Otherwise, a more serious dedicated approach that matches the feed to the nib seems to be required.

Return greetings from NE England. Tyneside, to be exact. If you can wait until tomorrow I could post samples of Lamy 1.1, 1.5 and 1.9 italic nibs. I'm using the laptop at the moment and the scanner is attached to the office PC upstairs. There is a caveat - I'm a lefty underwriter, and I've reshaped all three nibs to left oblique.

Would love to see samples.

My experience of RVI is purely as a 'customer'! Same for Rake Lane, Freeman, General and Queen Elizabeth. And for those of you not in on the joke, they're all hospitals - all of which I have sampled as a customer, for various reasons.

Samples tomorrow. <Checks clock> Samples later today. Time for bed, methinks.

This is a quick, if messy, comparison of the 1.1 and 1.5 nibs. I'm sure the orange ink enhances the line definition of the 1.5.

Sorry about the image size. I can't figure out how to resize it. As for ink, I'm a big fan of Air Corp Blue Black. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the pic!

I love the 1.5. Will probably give it a go. Perhaps the nib isn't as sharp as i'd like, but for under £5 and interchangeable, it's worth a shot.

As promised, a scan of all three Lamy italic nibs in use. All have been reshaped to left oblique.

Hope this helps, although the scan could be better. Still getting used to Linux Mint.
