Gaudy looking pens

Recommended Posts

Looking at the photos of the LA pen show, I was surprised at the number of brightly coloured pens. I'm going to go so far as to call them gaudy. I've only got one gaudy looking pen myself, a bronze GT Bexley Simplicity that looks almost orange. It's just as well it's a nice writer or it'd never see the light of day. I guess it is just personal preference...

Does anyone have a thing for brightly coloured pens...?

Sure, if well done, but then my gaudy might be different than your gaudy. Is the ST Dupont Opus X gaudy? How about a red stardust Conway Stewart? What about an Amber ST Dupont Chairman Montparnasse or the Burgundy guilloche one?

To me just about any Krone pen is gaudy. My wife likes bright colored pens it's how I got her into fountain pens a little. She has the Lime, pink, raspberry, and violet , Safar's Al-Star's, and Studio Lamy's, as well as the purple VP.

The difference between the almost right word & the right word is really a large matter--it's the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning.

Most, if not all, Krone and Delta pens are quite gaudy. However its all relative and people's views will probably differ.

The sword is mightier than the pen. However, swords are now obsolete whereas pens are not.

That would be me (although I think Deirdre has me beaten by a mile). The only black pen I own was a gift. My others are every color imaginable, with a preponderance of purple. I also have lots of colorful demonstrators/transparent pens.

Yes, I think many of them would be considered gaudy. But I really like bright colors and shiny objects. :cloud9:

I love a bright pen. The flashier the better.

I'm not a fan of lime green or bright orange, but modern pearlized acrylics are even attractive to me in those colors.

I use all my pens too, so I now have more bright acrylic ones than elderly and delicate celluloid, though that was what initially attracted me to fountain pens as a kid.

I like looking at the pen while I'm writing with it. I always remember that the pearl duofold is a fine, sharp italic while the sunrise visconti is a broad stub. I can always find what I want easily too, as each pen seems more like an individual.

I have noticed that there are still plenty of plain dark color pens being made, I always wondered who would prefer them to a bright colored one.

Now I know :-)

What about that $1.5million Mont Blanc with the emeralds and diamonds? That has to be at the top of the list!

My pens tend to be less 'gaudy', and more conservative. At most, I have maki-e or celluloid pens which most would hardly call gaudy.

I think to be more precise it's the marbled effect ones that really get me puzzled as to who would want them

Yes I like a pen to look sleek and shiney but not marbled or pearlised or lime green.

:hmm1: tbh I find it marginally gaudy... No offense intended! Maybe I just prefer curves to squares/diamonds. Nice shade of red though. And I do like gold trim. A lot of people can't stand gold trim.

Sounds like it although I haven't seen it! On the other hand diamonds are a girls best friend. Not keen on emeralds.

Shiny is good. Purple too (but not marbled) lol

Do you use black ink?

Gosh I'm sure lots of people like that, it looks impressive. But I would prefer plain white or cream with rose gold trim.

Nope. I own a bottle (Noodlers Borealis Black), but I got it free when I went to the NC pen show a couple of years ago. My least gaudy color is Legal Lapis, but most of my pens are inked with bright, frequently contrasting, inks. Someone questioned my use of orange/red ink (Yu-Yake) in my new Stipula Passaporte (clear with green swirls), but I thought it looked interesting. :roflmho:

I do have an amethyst flecked Conway Stewart, but that's not the same as marbled, is it?

I don't know if I have thing for brightly colored pens but I don't mind some color, marbled celluloid and what not. Some of the older Viscontis I have in vintage celluloid are bit bright but I wouldn't call them gaudy.

Some of those recent pens with overdone overlays, I find those gaudy. Overlays just don't do it for me. Inlays like a Pelikan Toledo are o.k. -- in fact that's the only inlay I own.

do they (the previous and this one) qualify as gaudy? If so I am guilty!
