Is that Noodlers Cayenne? I love that inkcloud9.gif

Need a pen repaired or a nib re-ground? I'd love to help you out.

...

I was working on italic printing, but my copy of the Getty/Dubay book got stolen with my bag. ...

I condole your loss.

Getty-Dubay's WRITE NOW often appears at a discount on eBay or Amazon or Half.com --

till then, my own Italic program BETTER LETTERS is now on sale for $0.99 -- it's an iPad/iPhone/iPodTouch app (that I designed with a scribally concerned MD). It may help you get back on the path to improvement, at least till you can find another WRITE NOW.

My goodness, this confirms a suspicion of mine that almost everyone on FPN has nicer handwriting than me. I suppose I should work on it one of these days - maybe when I retire.

Thank you. It's difficult, but I'm trying to slow down.

I've seen mention about the way a pen is held ... correctly, incorrectly ... I searched, but haven't found any posts about this. Would holding a pen "correctly", help one's penmanship to some degree? Is there a correct way to hold a pen?

I usually print so my cursive isn't that great.

Then again I don't usually make my Q's like that.

I usually "fancy print" them.

It isn't carved in stone, but this is the generally accepted "best" way to hold a pen.

If you pick up a Lamy Safari or an All Star, you'll find that these pens have been designed with that hand position in mind.

As a teenager, when I first took a serious interest in Calligraphy, I used a different, awkward hand grip and it took a couple of months to re-train. I'm glad that I did because the illustrated position means that I can write for long periods with my writing under control and with no feeling of cramp or strain.

I have a lamy safari with a 1.5mm stub and having a difficult time with it. I am left handed and can't seem to get the correct angle so that the nib is making full contact with the paper. One method I have tried is turning the paper perpendicular to me and sort of "drawing" letters top to bottom.

I'm not left-handed, so please tell me if I'm speaking rubbish!

As the moulded pen grip of the Lamy Safari is symetrical, the mirror-image of the same hand position should work exactly the same as for right-handed users provided you're an underwriter!

I seem to remember Ann Finley giving these pens a good review, and she's left-handed.

(update) I've found it - here's the review

I'm right handed and I'm trying to hold the pen as "normal" as pictured above.

But there are alternatives ... - for the FP the most iportant is to have the nib at that sweet angle when writing goes smooth.

I'm learning left hand writing for the last decade and the best suite alternative to right hand is to write in "mirror" mode - "Leonardo da Vinci" style - this the most natural way for the left hand-ers =)

The immediate benefit is that not every one can read it and it's a natural form of encryption =).

When writng with pencil sometimes it's much easier to hold the pencil below your hand/palm - but this is for curves and not letters. That style is very fast and very suited for "filling"/covering large areas =)
