What Does Your Handwriting Look Like

As this forum has grown considerably in size, this topic is typical of a new, emerging problem. As I'm adding this example of my handwriting to this thread, I'm fairly sure that I haven't posted it here already, but I'm not certain. I started to work my way through the 49 pages of entries but It's just too time consuming. I want to apologize in advance if I've posted it here, before!

I have an idea that I've seen it before, but lovely to see again. Stunning style! Did you make that up? In 1656 surely they didn't say "off of" or half the other things you wrote? But what would I know? That time was the transition between Early Modern English and what we speak today, wasn't it?

byronss,

This is the original document from 1656. As it's difficult to read, I re-wrote it exactly, word for word, for clarity. I had to get help in deciphering some of the really difficult parts. This is the will of my great, great, great, great, great grandfather.

Wow, what a piece of history you have there! Very difficult to read, but when reproduced in today's handwriting, it's surprisingly modern English despite the odd looking handwriting of the time.

Two and a half months ago, started writing with fountain pens again after a long time. Currently this is how my handwriting looks like, and I'm working on it everyday to improve it. Sadly, didn't find any place to learn Western calligraphy here in Singapore, else would've liked to join a class to take proper lessons.

I thought this would be fun. :)

It looks like you are truly ambidextrous! I've always thought I was supposed to be, because I do some things left handed without thinking about it, have tried some others left handed with some success, can only do some things left handed because of visual deficiency in right eye; but, I'm basically right handed. And I got my hand slapped, then a lecture, about doing things left handed when I was young, because "it's a right handed world."

I noticed that my strokes were a little different (different stroke order?) compared to writing right handed. :) It was a fun thing to do, though. I did have to write quite a bit slower with my left hand for the writing to come out the way that it did. It wasn't "hard," but it felt like there was more thinking involved. :P

That's nice that she is coming back. When I was searching for a place to learn calligraphy, had noticed that she was here, but it was already too late. This time will definitely try to attend her workshop.

Here is a sample of my regular handwriting on top and my practice with italics. I didn't think about being left handed when I bought the italic pen "fancy writer by speedball" so I had to turn the page 90 degrees to the right so it was perpendicular to me in order to get the chisel at the correct angle. I used a pilot metropolitan with a medium nib and parker quink black for my regular handwriting.

Today's piece, done with Pelikan 4001 Brown. It's quickly becoming my new favourite brown, especially considering its price point (less than 4 bucks for 62.5ml!)

EDIT: To add a picture with a more accurate representation of the ink colour.

I've been trying to learn to write nice for a few weeks now, but it always looks messy when I size the text down a bit. Should I be looking for different paper, thinner nib or adjust the medium I have, or look into another ink or just keep practicing?

Edit: I realize the question was formed in a bit more difficult manner than it needed to be, so I try again. 4 weeks ago I didn't know cursive, now I can do above. That's written fairly quick, and tighter than the spacing I use when I practice. That's about the size & tightness I'm looking to be my new everyday handwriting. It looks messy, closed loops, overall smudgy feel to it. Would you assess the problem be mostly in the area of the nib (size m, and pretty wet) and would adjusting - or replacing - it fix the thing, or is the problem the cheap copier paper I'm using and would acquiring proper writing medium result in ink holding form together better, or would another ink type have major effect - it's diamine blue black on there now. Or is it just that I'm writing it wrong, and will overcome in time through practice? Any input is appreciated, thanks.
