Well, my first flexible nib arrived in the mail today, so I'm starting to learn Copperplate! Here's the result of this afternoon's efforts (and IAMPETH's tutorial videos over the weekend):

Thanks FPN!

not expert delivering an opinion, but I think your example above proves this flexible nib has found a very good hand in which to ultimately be used to its full potential:)

My writing is either straight or backhand except for plain boring cursive. I'd like to try a new writing style with a forward slant like the one above. What's the name for that calligraphy paper? Is there a free template or .pdf online?

—Jill, out today, back to FPN late afternoon

P.S. Also looking for a cheap low-cost flexy-nib pen. I'm finding the italic nib is too rigid and pointy-cornered, not fun enough. —J

Let there be light. Then let there be a cat, a cocktail, and a good book.

Thank you, I'm flattered :) I need a lot more practice (and far more patience than I have) to get anywhere near your level though!

Jill check this page for templetes:

https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php?/topic/5152-handwriting-aids-and-links-to-lesson-sites-other-helpful-sites/

also suggest the Pilot Plumix, available at Target stores for $7ish.. it has an italic nib with slight flex.. also look on marketplace board for sales of modestly priced vintage pens with semi-flex nibs..view the photos, and descriptions..also per yesterday's post jbb may be able to advise you in the dip nibs that might fit your need..

see Caliken's posts/links above. semi-flex may be what your looking for..there's rigid to flex, Then you have the Shape of the nib.. two seperate things..extremes of either may be too much for you at first.. Caliken, and others describe this so much better than I doembarrassed_smile.gif

Leo,

I will put a new writing sample as soon as my pen gets here from California that I am sooooo ready to try out. :) But you still WIN in handwriting and flourishing. I need much more practice, but will gladly make the "sacrifice" of time...after my little ones are in bed at night, of course. :)

Thanks for the support! I am really enjoying learning copperplate.

The guidelines here are my own design. Specifically, I modified Jason F. McBrayer's italic guideline code, writingpaper.py, to work with copperplate, based on the geometries & dimensions recommended by caliken and tipstricks. The Python script generates PDF guidelines, with user-specified page size, orientation, x-height, etc.

I am posting the current implementation on my web space, along with letter-size PDF's with 3.75 and 4.50 mm x-heights. I print them without scaling, centered, and at 1200 dpi resolution for the best results.

The files are available online:

http://www.rpi.edu/~kellet/guidelines/

Let me know if you find the guidelines useful, or have recommendations to improve them. Enjoy!

Thanks for the guidelines!! Maybe they can be added to the "Handwriting Aids" at the top of this forum?

No problem - I am picky, wasn't satisfied with the guidelines I found, and am happy to share the product of my nerdy efforts. The guidelines are updated when I improve the script - as I have over the last half hour. Please PM me with any specific requests.

Anyway -- let's get this thread back on track!

My favorite children's song. Top half written with Pelikan Souveran M400 fine nib and Waterman Florida Blue. The bottom half was written with a Lamy Safari fine nib and J. Herbin Lierre Sauvage (green).

You attach a file when you reply. It's under the box where you type.
