What Does Your Handwriting Look Like

OK, I'll give this a try. This is an example of my 'normal' note taking hand. Although I like the paper of the Campus notebooks, the 7mm rule does cramp things. Sitting at an odd angle doesn't help either.

In any case, comments or suggestions for improvement are welcome (it's supposed to be Spencerian!)

Oh yes, it's a Lamy 2000, fine nib with Aurora black. That might be part of the 'cramped' problem....

I think it's not a problem with the line spacing - you could always skip a line inbetween. What makes it looked cramped and difficult to read is the missing room horizontally between the letters. Look at this fine example of master Madarasz from iampeth.com: he leaves nearly the same room between letters than a letter itself would take.

Right you are! Amazing how sometimes the bloody obvious needs to be pointed out. Don't know why I was thinking vertically when he problem was horizontal (is there such a thing as direction dyslexia? )

According to page 22 of the New Spencerian Compendium, spaces between letters should be 1.5 u-spaces. So, time to stretch it out a bit....

My handwriting. I use a broad Italic nib for everyday writing - it produces subtle thick/thin variations and I find the italic nib is capable of being used on most types of paper, unlike a flexible nib.

Very nice!!! i want to learn to write cursive like that, but i am not very good a cursive....

that's my day-to-day penmanship, it's quite a mutation between print and cursive, and sometimes the same letters would differ within the same sentence. it's a bit schizophrenic.

i will try to post a cursive note sometime...

This is a sample of my writing. I'm new to using the fountain pen in my everyday writing.

Here are some abecedarians in Noodler's turquoise eel ink. A bit shaky, I'm afraid.

Hey Glindauer, +1 on the shakiness. Once I stopped using a death grip on my pencil/pen, a most pronounced shakiness emerged in my writing, and every so often a full jerk. Sometimes it's enough to drive me batty, and sometimes it's not there at all. I have wondered if (in my case) it's not yet another side effect of hypothyroidism, but either way it's either live with the shakiness or go back to the intensely painful death grip, so I live with it.

At some point I'll drag out the scanner and have a go at posting something -- so many people have such beautiful handwriting here!

Not really a scribe, more of a Pharisee...

Trevor,

You can definitely change how you write, but you need to practice the new shapes you choose. The best time to do this is at home, relaxed, like in a journal, or writing a note to a family member. If your only practice is when you are stressed with something else-- taking notes at work or school-- it is hard to keep from slipping into your old way of writing.
