Hello! I just got my first fountain pens. (I think I've played with calligraphy pens briefly in the distant past, but not much). These are all on A5 pieces of printer paper.

My normal writing is some sort of joined-up print. My i's have a tendency to disappear as I go faster. I'd like to tidy it up some more. I used to write half-height on fine-ruled paper - my writing's a little bigger and untidier than it was then.

I got a TWSBI Eco with EF nib, which writes pretty similarly to the rollerball sizes I tend to use.

I also got a Lamy Joy with 1.9mm nib and found that I'm not sure how to write various characters in italic...

This was kinda cool - I held the pen much higher up the barrel and swooped about. Can't write other words like this, though! I like 'fa' as a word start.

My first attempt at italic miniscules. I have a great long way to go. Any advice would be appreciated from the great italic writers out there.

Do you have a model for italic script you would like to emulate? Here is a good one:

Jaki Svaren in the Reed College Scriptorium February, 2015

Jaki Svaren was a student of Lloyd Reynolds and is a professional calligrapher and the author of "Written Letters," an excellent calligraphy resource. I have her permission to post these materials.

I also recommend you view the Lloyd Reynolds videos on youtube dot com.

Happy writing!

I had a look at some actual italics today.

I tried with the TWSBI Eco EF nib too, which was weird.

Angled to show feathering.

I need to practise the o (and hence a) shape - I don't much like them that narrow but would like to be able to get it right... And I'm curving a lot of lines that ought to be horizonal or vertical.

Voiren, I would like to see your italics but whenever I click the link I am told that I don't have permission to view the photo. I don't know if it's me being dim or if there is something you have to do at your end.

Cheers,

David.

David, are they showing now? They should have been showing inline before rather than as links, but I've changed them to public in flickr as well.

My casual italic is so rusty. I've been doing copperplate/roundhand so much for the last 9 months that my hand keeps wanting to write like that which doesn't work in italic. Oh, well. that's my story is so many areas, jack of all trades, master of none.

Day two of learning italic. Decided to get ambitious after a few kuksas of coffee. Feedback appreciated. I know a few spots are uneven. My paper shifted when I bumped the table.

PaganArcher,

From your writing, I believe you are looking at the letter shapes without paying attention to the ductus. "Ductus" refers to how the pen moves to produce the letters. Look carefully at the Jaki Svaren exemplar. Many letters are executed in a single stroke, that is without lifting the pen. Others are two-stoke letters. I think if you abide by those conventions, your italic will improve.

That said, you are showing considerable improvement in consistent nib angle and in your entry and exit strokes. Progress is being made!

Thanks David. Looking at it more, I've noticed the inconsistencies over the last few hours. I'm trying not to be too hard on myself as I've only put a rough 6 hours into the italic hand with no proper exemplars to keep by for reference. And using a shaky table in a hunting shack or my leg as a writing surface is doing me no favors.

I have some on my checklist as funds become available, but until then, I'll persevere and do my best.

I'm also noticing that maintaining also 45° angle is more difficult for me given the round section of the Pilot parallel I'm currently borrowing.

I had a battle with 'a's today, until I changed where I paused when writing it. Trying to write the whole bottom of the curve smoothly was giving me more u-like results. This type of a is pretty much upside-down from what I'm used to, which has a pointier top and a rounded bottom.

(Flickr's being sloooow tonight which is what causes you to see links rather than images, if that happens).
