What Does Your Handwriting Look Like

In addition to working on my script, I would also like to improve my non-drafting style handwriting (that is, handwriting that uses lowercase letters as well), but I don't want to try and do too many things at once. I would like to develop an italic style. Perhaps I should work on that first, instead of the script?

So after working on Spencerian with some diligence now for about 1/2 a year ... Tonight I've totally relaxed, and wrote with out paying attention to the strict forms that I impose on myself. This is now a very quick, totally relaxed hand ... What do you think ?

Richard, brilliant. Wasn't this script originally inspired by the wavy and organic lines found in Nature? I think it's all there. Very nice indeed.

Thanks so much for the kind comments, Alexander.

Here's what I'm playing with today - always playing.

This is a sample of my handwriting. I have never had bad handwriting, however I believe that there is room for improvement. I often have trouble connecting another letter to an "o" gracefully, and I also feel my capital letters are perfectly adequate, however they lack any real personality.

I note that (at least some of the time) you don't connect your initial capitals to the next letter. This gives you quite a bit of freedom in terms of how you write them since you don't have to worry about where you last stroke goes.

The italic capitals that Getty and Dubay promote can be a good starting point for clear forms which allow for a bit of flourish. I find the A, D, G, H, M, and N particularly fun. Here's what they look like ...

(one probably needs to be show the order of strokes for some of these letters for them to seem natural to write, I suspect)

This is my handwriting, today, with my first FP. Needs some work, as I can see. I've made that my leap-year self-improvement project. Improve my handwriting and learn maybe Spencerian Script or a more formal cursive.

Thank you, Richard!

I'm excited to learn and practice - I used to have very nice penmanship in jr. high and high school. A teacher criticized my penmanship in 6th grade and I spent the entire summer practicing until I had beautiful, light (bpp), and about 1/2 normal size cursive. I guess I'm stubborn and hopefully that will help me in this endeavor, so many years later.
