146 writing grey with black ink?!

hello, everyone! not a big deal, but i've been filling my EF146 with aurora black and it looks grey on paper no matter what i do. thought maybe i'd left water in the reservoir, so emptied it out, dried the nib, and let it sit for awhile. other fine and extra fine pens seem to produce a blacker line with the same ink ...whattup?

also, anybody have a good, safe way to buff out the tiny scratches these pens get with just ordinary use?

thanks!!!!

How old is the ink? Have you tried some with a cotton bud swatch? Other than age and water in your pen - I have no idea. Good luck with this puzzle :headsmack:

An EF won't allow you to lay to much ink down so depending upon the paper it may appear grayish. Aurora black is fairly saturated but not the most saturated black out there. It could be the combination of the ink, paper and certainly the nib. I have a 146 but its a wet medium and I'm using MB Violet. Have you tried another black?

It is nothing wrong with your pen, this is quite common with EF and thinner pen nibs - if it's a real problem you might try to change the nib size or use a different ink.

The sword is mightier than the pen. However, swords are now obsolete whereas pens are not.

As Pippin60 says, you could try another black - Aurora Black is supposed to be a black black, but another, perhaps more saturated black black is Herbin Perle Noire - my favourite black. Very velvety and should flow even through an EF nib.

Agree on all points - but most likely your ink, I think :)

Have you thought about trying Noodler's heart of darkness black?

Would be interested in your experience with how smooth and opinions on the EF nib. About to pull the trigger on a 146 in a EF.

In Rotation: MB 146 (EF), Noodler's Ahab bumblebee, Edison Pearl (F), Sailor ProGear (N-MF)

In storage: MB 149 (18k EF), TWSBI 540 (B), ST Dupont Olympio XL (EF), MB Dumas (B stub), Waterman Preface (ST), Edison Pearl (0.5mm CI), Noodler's Ahab clear, Pilot VP (M), Danitrio Densho (F), Aurora Optima (F), Lamy 2000 (F), Visconti Homo Sapiens (stub)

My 146s write black with MB black ink. Your issue is probably related to insufficient flow. But on the bright side, you needn't buy the new MB Oyster grey.

LOL!! I'm going to send the pen to Mike-It-Work...maybe he'll get to it before his trip to Japan. Thanks for all the kind thoughts, dear friends :-)

I keep hearing great things about MikeItWork. When you send it in, you might include a sheet of your favorite stationery, written samples of the 146 and other pens with the kind of line you want, and the kind of ink you've been using. Good luck!
