twsbi vacuum filling system fountain pen project

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Can I pre-order one of the vacuum fulling fountain pen already?

It would be my first!

Thanks,

Bert

Bert,

It is too early to pre-order. I don't even have it made yet.

The Visconti pen you shown is definitely very beautiful. But of course we cannot copy it, we are twsbi, must have our own style, right.

Most of the twsbi products (99%) are affordable by general public, that's our policy, don't worry.

Now that I've seen the prototypes I'm going to have to have one of each I think. Definitely the piston filler.

Phone calls last just minutes, emails get deleted, but letters live forever.

Absolutely right. I'd know a TWSBI anywhere!

Are there other TWSBI designed pens to see? I saw the Diamond version in the other topic (and ordered 2 of them).

Speedy has talked about a larger version of the Diamond, but at the moment, he's just starting out. It's good to see that he's putting a lot of thought into establishing his own style, though.

Speedy,

if you PM me your address I'll send you something you can use during collecting your thoughts on the designs (it helped me getting through university). And if you could dream up something beautiful, personal, retrofocus like, stylish, extraordinary, historical and what was is it? Oh yes: to write with before Valentine's Day, then I'll have something to give to myself on my birthday (= 14th February)....

Sorry for being such a noob. Can someone explain what exactly a vacuum filler is, and how it works?

Thank you :)

Just a poor grad student here.

Have a look here.

For an example of a modern pen with the same technology, have a look to the Pilot Custom 823 (filling instructions here, for a video

).

I'm eagerly looking forward for this pen to be available...

at the moment we don't have nib in B or BB size. We may try to get them in the future.

Awesome! I'm in :-). Will these be as easy to disassemble and service as the piston filler seems to be? I like the idea of a pen that I can fix quickly at home should it ever need maintenance.

Will this pen seal the ink reservoir when the blind cap is screwed fully shut, like the Pilot Custom 823? I believe that feature was intended to make the pen safe for air travel, but to me it seems like some nuisance having to open it a little before writing. (Disclaimer: I don't actually have an 823. I've wanted one for a while, but balked at the price.)

My vintage Sheaffer vac-plunger pens write with the blind cap fully closed, and that is my preference.

I have only one cheap demonstrator with spring loaded cap, and the ink always splatters on the inner cap when I cap or uncap the pen. Is this likely to happen for the vacuum fill pen? If so, I'll prefer a twist cap. In my limited experience, the twist cap also prevents ink from drying out better than the spring loaded cap.

Looking to the pics, the cap seems to be a twist one.

I assumed Speedy was referring to the design of the CLIP.

I thought the same as well, and yes, a twist cap, please. The clip looks better in the green demo, or is it me? A more refined one would be an improvement, but the general looks of the pen are fine. As someone that has followed the original thread for months, let me congratulate you for the effort and knowledge of making an affordable piston filler. Will the nibs have several options (from Xf to BB plus italics?).

Among my pens is a Platinum Preppy, which has an innovative spring loaded inner cap. I have never had any ink splatter in this pen and it's clear plastic, so I would know if it did. I think we need more pens with pull caps, especially with modern technology. The pull cap worked well for the Parker 51 and Sheaffer PFM.

In this pen, the spring loading is for clip function; it is a diecasting clip, not steel stamped clip. a well designed inner cap can provide good sealing of the pen, not leaking out.

I've noticed that in many demonstrator pens a spring loaded cap snaps shut so violently that it causes the pen to spit ink. I'd imagine this is why demonstrators so often have screw fit caps.

But screw fit caps take longer to get off. Not that long, but long enough to count if all you want to do is to do is to jot down a telephone number.

So how about solving this problem by replacing the screw thread with a spring bayonet lock rather like a push fit light bulb?

This would be quicker to get on and off than a screw thread. But because it would be necessary to twist the cap to close the bayonet lock, it would prevent the sharp snap that causes pens to spit ink.

The bayonet lock could be operated purely by using the springiness of the plastic itself or, as there is already a spring loaded device in the cap, this could be designed to provide the springiness to lock the cap. As the pen is made of a relatively brittle plastic, the second of the two options might prevent cracks in the plastic.

Please make sure the inner cap can be extracted to clean ink trapped between the two caps.
