How to make handwriting more "manly"?

19. It came with the pen.

:ltcapd:

that one'd work really perfectly for someone skilled enough to pick up another pen and demonstrate by switching to another style... oh, i shall try to reach that skill some fine day, oh yes i will...

(i'm actually trying to exorcise the loopy, rounded ghosts of my grade-school looped cursive from my writing these days. it's not unmanly or anything, it just doesn't go well with the cursive italic i want to develop. for a style i haven't actually used in over twenty years, those looped ascenders sure are tenacious...)

I wish my handwriting looked like my mother's.

A question for the OP: Could it be that your writing has simply not drifted as far from what you were taught as has that of your critic? I suspect "manly" in his eyes might be simply "inferior" in others'.

#19 appears to be a popular response! Glad you folks find them funny.

I know~!!! put on your best Arnold Schwarzenegger voice, pull out a machete, rocket launcher or even a machine gun, an carve/shoot your name into a solid steel door, mountain side, or back of an enemy. I'd have to say you'd run out of things to write on really soon.

I was taught Palmer too..

wish that it slightly resembled OG's fine hand.

You guys were the lucky ones then..

I was already into the era of computers hence less exposure to old-school teachings resulting in chicken scratchings on paper..um..does that make my penmanship chicken-ly or chickadee ? hmmmmblink.gif *cockadoodle dooooooooooooooooooooooooooo*

Well, let me tell you what looks girly to me.

  • uniform line thickness
  • fine lines
  • curvy but simple strokes
  • high x-height
  • something curvy besides a simple dot on the i
  • no slant
  • relatively high legibility
  • slightly extended interletter spaces
  • bigger overall

So, to look manly, avoid those things.

I love all of the responses here, especially the poem. I was laughing out loud reading some of what had been written and my husband threw in his two cents, saying that he admires elegant handwriting, no matter who wrote it. He identified as being feminine or "girly" circles or hearts instead of dots over the i and j and he would personally refrain from those.

By the way, I think your handwriting counts in the 'elegant' department. It's beautiful!

Hi all,

Time and time again, I have received comments like "hey your handwriting is soo girly". I'm not sure if they mean, neat or simply girly. I write cursive handwriting and try to add in fancy loops sometimes (ex. a cool looking "f", or starting "T" in a sentence with swirls ) . Its hard to explain . . .

Q) In your opinion, what does it mean for a handwriting to be "manly" ?

- does it have to be NOT neat

- ur thoughts?

ATK

I have a fairly classic Palmer style handwriting... it is how I was taught back in the stone age in school before ballpoints....

To this day I still have a very neat and, I believe, easy to read classical handwriting.... It is not an exact copy of Palmer, but over the years it is how my handwriting developed..

Take a look... do you consider this girly.... should it be considered girly.... I don't think so.... it is correct for the style that was taught to both boys and girls when I was in elementary school...

People who consider neat and stylish handwriting girly generally do not have great handwriting themselves, but might believe they do...

Want to show them some real MANLY handwriting... get a block of stone and chisel....

I will stay with my handwriting..

Tell your husband he has great taste

in his choice of spouse

in other areas his opinions waste

and should not leave the house

I agree with the suggestion to use a broad nib

There's an irony in there, somewhere. Just can't put my finger on it...

Bigger, broader, manlier... Right?

On the other side, if you consider some slang word... Yes, that's an irony.

You knew that. It's always about the dialectical opposites. To be more manly, one has to accept his feminine side.

Oh you are so funny

that was quite a joke

but you are on the money

I really am a bloke

I swear a lot and drink my beer

I swagger and I strut

as girls go by I turn and leer

my head is full of smut

I do this stuff that's manly

it's natural you see

'cos my name is Stanley

and I can stand to pee

I'm insensitive and cloddish

not gived to too much brain

my face is colored radish

and my mind it don't retain

I don't got no manners

an' I'd rather play with cars

I uses wrench and hammers

an' I likes to hang in bars

But when I 'as to write a note

to remind me what to buy

an' others see what I 'as wrote

they says you ain't no guy

I dot my I's with hearts

and make a little swirl

then I turns around and farts

and you know I aint' no girl
