Namiki Emperor Urushi Red

Hi Casaross,

I have a pen just like this one with a fine nib. The pen is huge but really confortable to hold and use. That is if you like large pens. It is a pen that is meant to be used. My fine nib is very smooth and there is a nice spring to it, i think due to the huge nib and the long tines.

The only issue i see with this pen is carrying it around due to its size. It is not really a pen i bring to work with me (although i have done so a few times)

Another great thing about it is the enormous ink capacity. Overall it is a great pen, both aesthetically and practically. It is probably my favourite pen out of my 130+ (mainly Japanese) pen collection.

That is one hell of a large nib.

I especially like how they've even thought to take care of the people who would want to post the pen with the velvet inside the cap. Though the pen is so huge, I can't imagine anyone would want to post it...

Thanks so much for posting the writing sample. This is extremely helpful. Now I am in doubt as to whether the B or the M nib best suits what I want. My favorite nib is an Omas M and I understand that the Namiki M would be approximately the same width. Your writing sample, however, makies it look like the Namiki B would be close to an Omas M or another European M nib. Do you have any comparisons that you would make or guidance that you would provide?

Thanks again.

Dear friend,

I'm sure that the B size of my Namiki nib is similar to a Montblanc M.

The B nib of a Montblanc that I had with a Big Boheme was much more wide!

I'm trying to put some pics for you.....

Looking at those pics you could agree that M Europe nib is near to the B Namiki one.

I personally think so.

Let me know....

Thank you for this excellent review!

I'm really impressed by the black velvet inside the cap :yikes: They've thought about every detail. It seems that at Namiki they are using fountain pens, not just manifacturing ;)

If you want your dreams to come true, don't sleep.

I know I'm a bit late with this comment, but I love this pen!

It is on my list for future buys, but may have to stay there a little longer...

i like the way it writes differently on pressure applied depending on the user's writing style.

the 149 is dwarfed by that hulk of a pen.

Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing

thanks for an amazing review of a truly fabulous pen..

i can't believe how big it is!!! youa re so right the urushi lacquer looks perfection...if you hadn't said i would never have known the top of the barrel is removed..incredible detail and quality.

What makes it for me is what you said abou posting the cap. i never EVER post my pans as the cap or threads on the cap damage the barrel over time...

the fact they have lined the cap to stop damage when posting is stunning..makes you wonder why more pens dont...what a beauty..

i will have to have one day..many thanks

Just got one of this giant last week...didn't want to post anything until I'm sure of how I feel...I have to say, I fully appreciate what this review says in every aspect.

Unfortunately for her...I'm a user and not a collector...so i've put her to work since she has been in my possession. She is a real beauty and I can see myself enjoying her for many years to come.

The only thing I'll change though is the ink. I filled her partially with the Namiki ink that came with her...I find it a little too "wet". Will change to another over this weekend. ^___^

I've always admired the simplicity of this pen's color/finish from its picture in the Fountain Pen Hospital catalogs I get once in a while. It's nice to have some more images and details. Thanks.

One of these beauties paid a visit to the Seattle Pen Club a month or so ago. It was absolutely spectacular! Huge! Brilliant! Nib to die for! And so light in the hand. Wrote like a dream. Not likely that I will ever own one, but at least I can say I have met one.
