Where do your pens live?

I use pen cases from Penn State Industries. Each holds 64 pens and are great for bringing to the Pen Posse.

I got the box made to measure so that the chest can stand on my desktop and fit any pen size (I also tried to look for some victorian jewellery boxes before I got it done but they were too small), and the wooden pen trays I made, dyed and french-polished myself. I bought the slotter trays at GoPens.com though. The brass handles were purchased at my local hardware store and they have a double function - as handles and as spacers, so that the trays are separated when they're stacked. I've got the plastic inserts cut up both vertically and horizontally (they are interchangeable) so that they can be re-arranged to provide more space when I get more pens. The chest can accommodate up to 36 pens when all trays have the 9-pen inserts fitted as shown in the last pic and up to 56 pens when they are fitted with 13-slot inserts (pic 5) but I'm pretty sure I'll never go over 36 pens.

Currently at school they live in my new pen wrap from Nan and Ling. The lighting is rather bad in these shots but they were quick just so I could post them.

Good topic.

I've been pondering choices for pen storage too, and can't really decide. Seeing what others are using is very helpful - thank you to those who've shared photos.

In the meantime, I've been using a favourite old cigar box which lives on my desk. Its nothing like as well customized as timthepenman's. I've simply fitted it with felt lining and fits four with plenty of room, the other 10 regular users sit in my drawer, again on felt. The ones I don't use live in the cases that came with them.

  • 2 weeks later...

While hoping to find something bigger that could contain all my pen in one place and that wouldn't cost an eye, I use these.

That is AMAZING! When I first saw it I immediately hit reply to ask you where I can get one, then I kept reading to learn that it's custom! I don't know what I felt more: I was very impressed that such a beautiful box is so unique (i.e. one of a kind), but also very sad that I can't get one just like it. Maybe one day I'll have time to learn how to make nice things like that. :) Thank you for sharing!

I thought the same thing. Those knobs doubling as spacers is an ingenious idea. Have any blueprints?

I thought the same thing. Those knobs doubling as spacers is an ingenious idea. Have any blueprints?

The trays were the easiest thing - it's basically like making a picture/photo frame so that there is a recess to the bottom side of the tray that can fit the plastic slotter and some thicker cardboard backing (or, in the case of the photo frame - the glass on top and the cardboard backing). I got the wood strips at my local picture framing workshop and before I'd cut it to size I stripped the high-gloss varnish and re-dyed the veneer (it was red mahogany) - then I'd cut it all up (@45*), put the corners together and french-polished the frames. After that I just pre-drilled the holes for the knobs and screwed them in. I'll put some blueprints together when I have a few moments.

The box was another story - I got it first and it was made by a chap that runs an antique restoration business - he also makes jewellery boxes in limited quantities (mainly for friends/family) just as a hobby. He actually sent me some pics of my chest being made from scratch and I also have some photos of his other work that I've been sent to pick the pen chest design:

Other chests:

My pen chest - veneered only:

Veneered and with the colour applied:

http://s277.photobucket.com/albums/kk60/ihiml3n/Pen%20chest/Pen%20Chest_Colour/

Finished chest:

http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk60/ihiml3n/Pen%20chest/Pen%20Chest_finished/GOTOWASZKATULKA002JPG.jpg

Another option for a pen chest would be an old, Victorian jewellery box, but it needs to be pretty substantial, so that the inner dimensions are something in the region of 25 - 30cm (width) and 19 - 20cm (depth) - if the depth is less than that, the pens cannot be displayed vertically (and have to be stored horizontally), unless they're smaller (14 cm or less). I wasn't very lucky with getting the boxes I wanted on the Bay - I always ended up outbid

very interesting. I have a part of my pens in a drawer, the rest are in their original boxes.

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Buzz J, that is an awesome cabinet, how many pens does that thing hold? Are you close to filling it?.

And for my small token of where my pens live, which seems to be in the same type of case as a fair number of others around here...

That has got to be the most breathtaking Display Cabinet anyone could have, apart from its Japanes appearence it is just such a beautiful piece of furniture one could hope to have, I will be looking around the Antique shops for one just like it, thanks for the inspiration, I will worry about the inside storage of the pens when I have managed to find such a Cabinet. Minnesota Pen Home ~

The storage chest is a map chest purchased about 8 years ago from homedecorators.com.

It works very well, though after 19 years of accumulating, I wish I had a larger one.

I have 4 Visconti Pen trays stacked on top of each others:

- Tray 1 has the Montblancs, Viscontis and Conway Stewarts.

- Tray 2 has the smaller Danitrios and Nakayas

- Tray 3 has the pen tray removed and the larger Danitrios in there with individual socks

- Tray 4 has the Vanishing points and other less sexy pens

The pen purge is working as this is the first time in a long time that I have spare slots!

Tim

Tim,

Where do you get the liners? Or do you make the liners yourself? I have several nice cigar boxes

I would like to retrofit for pens. Those liners are perfect. Thanks for sharing.

I love the idea of the brass knobs, classy, clever, functional and very attractive.
