Pay it Forward 2009

Ayedasi:

I knew how you feel. I had someone who didn't reply for quite a while and I was about ready to send them a message to ask if they had received it or not. That morning I received a hand-written thank-you in the mail. It just seems to me to be common courteous to send a PM saying "Hey! I got the pen/ink/whatever you sent. Thanks!"

-Hello, my name is Kenny and I'm a fountain pen addict with a taste for Lamy and Esterbrook.

Without wishing to sound petty, I wonder if those receiving PIF 'gifts' would care to at least acknowledge receipt of them? I've given two pens away in recent weeks and although I received a reply from one member, the other hasn't even bothered to say he's received the pen. (I've no reason to suppose he didn't). Not a lot to ask for really - but then perhaps I'm the only one in this situation?

I also received no acknowledgement of the item I sent. I think the spirit of "Pay it Forward" would be better served if any person taking a gift would then in turn offer one in the same manner.

I sent out about 35 ink samples. I probably heard from a third to a half of the recipients, including a lovely postcard from Hawaii.

Honestly, I didn't expect an acknowledgment of each. Most people thanked me sufficiently in their requests, and I'm sure most will remember when the time comes to pay it forward.

I'm unsure of the etiquette of this sort of thing. I've received a couple of lovely gifts, and I always make sure to let the person know that they have been received, and to thank them. I've always done this in PM, and I've also sent thank-you's in the mail. Is it appropriate to post here in this thread saying thanks and package received? I just didn't want to clutter up this particular thread. If there is a definite protocol, maybe it should be posted, so everyone can see what the proper responses are. I know it's common sense to say "thank you" when someone gives you something, but like happened to supenguin, should it be in a PM or a hand-written note? Or both?

As far as myself personally, there are two projects I have in planning that will hopefully end up being multiple FP related items to give away on the PIF thread. It's just going to take a while, since it takes both time and money to make this stuff, and I've got limited amounts of each of them. I'm definitely interested in paying the community back for both the information and the cool stuff I've received through the kindness of strangers.

That being said, you're never going to get all the people to react this way all the time. People are just too different. I think if the whole PIF thread idea prompts just a few people who've benefited to participate as contributors, then it should be considered a success. There are always going to be a few people that just see an opportunity to get something for nothing, that's just human nature. I hope that's always going to be a minority of folks here, and that most people are looking for their chance to pay it forward. Another thing to consider is that most of the people asking to receive these gifts are the real new members, and they probably don't have much to offer the rest of the community, just now. As their collections grow, they will have more to offer in the future. I don't really think you get too many long-time collectors making requests here, as they've probably got most of what they want already, whereas the novices just want to try everything, but don't yet have a large collection of things to offer back. I can completely understand being a bit annoyed at not receiving any sort of acknowledgment when you give something away in a spirit of generosity, but I guess you just have to try not to let it get you down, and take heart in the people that do communicate their thanks back to you.

Aloha!

I don't think thank you's need to be posted here - and in fact, I'm not asking for a thank you - just a 'yep, I've got it' would do.

Nope your not, unfortunately good manners are not second nature to a lot of people.

I once heard a quote: "You really know someone's servant-heart when you see how they act when they're treated like one." If you're not giving things away for someone else's benefit instead of your own, then don't give it away.

That being said, I've been so blown away by the generous and servant-hearted members here at FPN. Some people may accidentally forget formal apologies on account of their excitement about something being truly free. It's a lost art in this world, giving. I'm glad we're renewing it here.

You've all done a great thing here, and I'd like to offer my appreciation and encouragement to remember why we give: to share the love of FP'ing with others. We all love stories of converts. But, we also like to encourage those who are new to find their niche. Let's give a little to see a lot of growth.

Thanks all for your participation and kind hearts, I'm one who is truly grateful! I'm sorry if I've ever forgotten to thank all of you.

That being said, I have a vial of Pelikan Blue-Black that I'd like to share. First PM gets it (pref CONUS). This is my first PIF gift besides to my girlfriend and roommate.

1 unrestored Spors pen with glass nib. The crecent filler does not move, pen was sold as needing restoration, and I just don't have the time to do it. When I 'dry tested' the nib on a sheet of paper, it seemed pretty smooth. here are thumbnails I took from the ebay auction I won
