MB224 sprung clip

I have received a MB224 from eBay, it came with a couple of problems, one of which is a sprung clip, is there a way to remove the clip, bend it back in shape and re-assemble? Does the top jewel unscrew? RH or LH threads? any things to watch out for?

Thanks in advance.

Hari

IIRC, and I'm old so that is unlikely, look inside the cap. Is there a set screw?

I looked inside, it has a transparent inner cap. I can see something which looks like it is a nut inside and my guess is that the top jewel has a threaded portion that threads into this nut. I want to be sure before I apply any force.

Has anyone here taken the cap apart on this pen?, i think a 221 will also be similar?

Thanks!

Hari

Did you check Tom Westerich's website to see if he might have info on it? I confess I'm not sure............

Thanks for that tip John, I looked up his site and found a very informative 'parts list' manual. but unfortunately that manual does not have any information about the model I am seeking help on. But the manual by itself is a very interesting read.

Well, I decided to leave the cap part as it is for now. The piston was quite stiff, so I took the pen apart(sorry forgot to take pictures), this is my first MB of this type, and I must say the construction is quite clever and cost effective. The piston runs inside an inner sleeve, this sleeve itself can be unscrewed from the barrel. This design ensures an annular air gap between the barrel and the ink reservoir. The best part is that no special tools are required to dismantle the filler. It took me a few tries to adjust the piston rod engagement for proper stroke length.

The feeder is enclosed inside the section cone. I did not attempt to remove it, the nib seems like it is pushed from the front, did not want to force anything, any clues about the proper way to get the nib and feed out?

Thanks!

Hari

Good news for me, I was able to figure out how to dis-assemble the cap. Thought I should document the procedure here.

The first step is to remove the inner cap which is friction fit. In the absence of a sophisticated inner cap puller which costs about 250USD from Pendemonium, I used a hand tap (M8x1.25mm). I threaded the tap on to the somewhat soft plastic inner cap and on the second pull I could extract the inner cap safely without damage.

Once the inner cap is removed, it is a simple matter of using a flat screw driver of the correct size to unscew the slotted cylindrical nut that secures the clip jewel screw.

The inner cap mechanism is a real clever one. It is spring loaded. When the section enters the cap, it first engages with the lip of the inner cap sealing the nib area, pushing it slightly more engages the clutch tabs at the section base that engages with the ridge on cap lip inner side. The spring action of the inner cap ensures proper airtight sealing and a good tactile feel while capping and uncapping, no wiggles.

I bent the clip washer slightly with a small plier covered with a thick rubber sheet to restore the clip tension.

Components that secure the clip:

The top of the cap:

The cylindrical nut with the spring assy for the inner cap:

The above photo of the assembly shows the correct orientation of the clip washer hole centering collar. The top of the inner cap engages with the bottom of the assy(Right hand side in above photo).

I hope this was useful.

Best,

Hari
