There was a post with a similar picture to this awhile ago, which I can't seem to find using the FPN search function or Google. I suspect that the website cache was reset or something with the upgrades that have been happening. As I remember, that picture wasn't of this quality. The corrosion of the metal in addition to the plastic doesn't seem consistent with anything that ink would do, however.

I think I recall that photo and I think it was (but isn't now) here.

I need more information before I can panic.

How long was the pen sitting with ink in it? Was it overnight? Over a month? Over two years?

It doesn't matter. No fountain pen ink should eat plastic that way. I have pens with feeds like this that have sat for several months, filled, without damage.

And think of all the pens that have sat until all the ink dried up.

I happened to save that picture to my HD. I renamed it so I would know what it was. It's original name was untitled.pdf. I like others am not convinced that an ink could have done that sort of damage to that pen.

Yep, that's the thread, and that's the photo. I guess its damage is a little different than this one, but the melted look of the plastic seems to be relatively similar. Phew. Thanks for posting those. I just spent the last however-long scrolling through the topics here and in "writing instruments" back through mid-June to no avail. *sigh* now I can rest easy.

Thanks dizzy and Evan. In my more than 20 years of using fountain pens and sometimes not being the most attentive about maintenance, the only damage ink has caused to my pens was (figuring it out recently) the iron-gall in Montblanc's Blue-Black or Lamy's Blue-Black that I used in my Waterman Le Man 200 which caused the gold around the base of the nib to corrode.

These photos reminded me of Troglokev's cautionary tale about stirring a cocktail with his Montblanc: alcohol and precious resin do not mix!

As for Richard's photo: it would be helpful for me to know if the damage were gradual or spontaneous -- if it can be known. I just checked all of my nibs/nib feeds; they all look pristine.

Yikes! What inks will do this? I have heard of BSB destroying Lamy feeds, but this looks terrible.

Here's what a failed Lamy Safari feed looks like --

The view is of the underside; the nib retaining rails have cracked but haven't broken off entirely. The two loose pieces are the nib retaining rails from a previous feed that failed.

Note all the points and sharp edges on the breaks; it's an entirely different sort of damage from that on the Nettuno Nautilus.

Well, that'll figure prominently in my nightmares tonight. Yikes. :o

The nightmare where you have a final exam in a class you didn't know you were enrolled in and your only fountain pen falls a apart when you sit down and write your name on the blue book?

Totally off topic, but odd enough (I think) to remark: I recently had part of that exact nightmare. My pen didn't fall apart and it wasn't a blue book exam, but I realized that I had been enrolled in a class that I had forgotten to go to all semester, and only remembered after the drop deadline and just before the exam. Terrible feeling, even in make-believe. Sometimes one's brain can be terribly cruel. When I woke up, I had to check my enrollments online to make sure that I wasn't trying to tell myself something subconsciously.

I half expect the tines of that nib to start waving about and a tinny voice to start emanating from the feed: Exterminate! Exterminate!

I was thinking more along the lines of The Fly's "help me... help meeeeee..."

Jesus !!! Maybe it was nitrosellulose lacquer.

I don't know what ink did this, but I think it worth pointing out that not all inks are benign. The pen is a Nettuno Nautilus; the feed, before the ink ate it, was a standard Bock feed.

I don't think neat whisky qualifies as a cocktail, and I deny ever using my MB as a swizzle stick (it was an ac-ci-dent), but the moral remains.

I had that nightmare myself. Many times. Even years after I was handed my sheepskin from CSU Long Beach.
