9, The Namiki Lever And Urushi Patents

And here are two Japanese pen patents, the Namiki, or Pilot lever box, patent no. 1,540,416, and the Namiki patent for resurfacing ebonite, or hard rubber with urushi lacquer, patent no. 1,600,293. The Namiki lever box is sort of a reverse-Waterman's lever box, since the lever straddles the box instead of the other way round.

 

The illustration of the lever box in the letters patent is kind of inelegant, but the actual lever as produced is one of the most stylish and distinctive levers.
