Mentmore is a English pen company, that made better pens under their own name & cheaper ones under the Platignum trademark. I think they were in business from the early 20th C through until the late 1950's, at which time they sold off the Platignum brand.

They did some lovely little pens, such as the Celeste & the Minor, and their bread & butter model was the Auto-flow.... which is a good pen in both button fill & lever fill form.

The Diploma was probably the bottom of the range, and its quality suffered as the years went on. IMHO The earlier ones feel much better in the hand.

I would hazard a guess that yours is circa 1955. I still think you got this pen at a reasonable price, as a good working Mentmore is usually in the £20 - £35 bracket.

I really like Mentmore pens, as I do most other so called "lesser" brands of British pens.  Most of them are exceptionally good writing pens, well made with superior nibs.  I also like the traditional, more conservative styling for everyday use in the office.  When I show these to people new to the vintage pen collecting community, they are always impressed with the way they write.  Always a good value.
