Montblanc Nib Sizes

Thank goodness for Google.

Darius - this is sensational and exactly what I was looking for - I completely agree on the line variation......my eye really likes the BB sized nibs. I just received a BB nib yesterday and will be springing for an OBB shortly.

Cheers

Adam

What a fantastic tool you have provided us with :) Thanks very much and also as a person who is yet to get her first MB this is a great help towards what nib I would prefer and I could see a B in my everyday writing perhaps ;)

Just to add another Thank You to the chorus, realizing the time put in to produce this resource. Thank You Darius. (I'm with Wael on the boring "M"s.)

It may sound a little greedy, but, does anyone have a stock versus stub versus italic scan? There is often confusion when these nibs are discussed, for instance I have read posts here stating, " I'm not sure if I should get a broad nib or an italic nib." , erringly comparing description of nib size to nib shape.

Could you just whip that up Darius?

Greg

In my hands, an OBB in a Boheme writes very much like an IB in a Conway Stewart. Not sure if that helps if you haven't experienced the CS italics.

Hey GP, been meaning to ask you - do the Bohemes only come with a disposable, cartridge re-fill - or do they have one of those "convertible" systems I keep hearing about?

P.S. A pic of the CS italics or conway writing style would be helpful if you have it?

Click on my signature and look at April 2009 in my blog. You'll see my pitiful scrawl, but not with IB or OBBs. Really must rectify that.

As to the Boheme, mine is one of the larger, fixed nib ones I got NOS and it has a converter in. I'll let the experts weigh in, but think the others are cart refills.

The "scrawl" really isn't all that bad, GP.

Also, Werner Herzog reading Madeline was just brilliant.

The more I listened, the harder I laughed! If you scan the web, there are other childrens books done in the same manner, but this one made me laugh the hardest. :ltcapd:

I don't have any cutomised nibs, an MB don't make any official stubs or italics. However, I do have some stock italics and stubs of other brands. I'll try to get a scan done over the coming weekend.

This is already a treasure of information.

My collection is not really varied, or large enough to do something like these diverse writing examples, but I tried to mimic these samples. It is a lot of work and time.

Most appreciated and looking forward to the other nib samples.

I don't plan change the nibs on my 146s, I have one OM and one EF, I will keep those forever.

A wonderful sample I believe I saw a while ago.

A big thanks to Adam for resurrecting it nearly six months later- well done mate.

Does anyone know about getting a nib exchange on a WE to try and get a BB or OBB??? I am thinking my Cervantes.

I just love my KOB on my 234 1/2....semi-flex, lots of shading. It is a '50's nib...take a hell of a nib to beat it for my eye.

Some day, I'll get a truly fancy looking nib...With pen, but it's got to go pretty dam far to beat the rather plain MB nib I got.

I can't scan any thing, got no scanner...would even show off my hen scratch, to brag that nib.

What do you mean by "feedback"?

Since many people have been asking about the different tip sizes MB offer, I thought that writing sample scans of all the currently offered nibs was a good idea.

All these are modern size 6 MB nibs (ie 146 sized nibs), except for the O3B which is a modern size 9 MB nib (ie 149 sized nib). To keep a standard, all samples are writen on 2 pages of the same paper with the same ink.

As most know that MB nibs are hand ground, some variation within a designated size is expected.

The straight tipped nibs:

High resolution scan.

The oblique tipped nibs:

http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/5403/mbnib02lr.jpg

High resolution scan.

Regarding the obliques, the OM seems to lay a thicker line in comparisson to the OB. However, on the page, the line is not thicker, but it is darker.

Great Stuff! Loved reading this post.

What do you mean by "feedback"?

"feedback" means feedback to your hand as the pen flows across the paper. Some people also refer to this as "tooth"

Darius - thanks so much for posting this frequently asked for resource.

Can you post the size of the spacing of the ruled lines on the paper you used? Or perhaps rescan the handwriting with a millimeter ruler shown in the scan. Without a size guage to measure the handwriting size you scanned, comparing our own handwriting to yours is difficult.
