It's translucent, but just barely.

 

It looks opaque until you look at it closely.

The smoke/black is translucent, but it is the least translucent of the three models. You have to hold it up the the light...

The thing is that I'm not a huge fan of demonstrators, but I like this pen a lot.

Then I think you should go with the smoke/black. It is easy to forget it's actually a demonstrator, but easy enough to check how much ink is left in the pen and what color it is...
