What a great thread.

There are some seriously lovely pens and watches here, and whilst I don't think my picture is quite up to the standard of some, I thought I would throw it into the mix anyway.

I took this photo a few days ago, to serve as an Instant-Messaging avatar...it turned out better than I thought it would, so I thought I'd share it here...

I'm afraid this is about as 'artistic' as I can be bothered to get. I'm quite lazy and trying to get a great photo out of this camera is harder than drawing blood from a stone.

From out of the land of the past come my watch and fountain pen. The watch is one I had to refurbish a bit to get running, but it's a sweetie! It was someone's Christmas present in 1950. The inscription on the back says, "All My Love, Vi," and bears the date "12/25/50." It has a quad dial, a pyramid crystal, and a 21 jewel Bulova 7AA movement. The pen is a large sized Sheaffer in marine green and black. --- proseandpoetry

very nice watch and pen proseandpoetry

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Well, I do congratulate you. Both of these items look as if they cost a fortune! I believe the pocket watch might be a Ball of some sort. Awfully fancy case. The railroad-approved ones were almost always either gold-filled, stainless, or an amalgam of metals. The fountain pen looks to be a Conway Stewart, maybe Model 60. I like both of these pieces very much!

Hi P&P,

The pen is a Conway Stewart Model 58. So, you're close! I'm not sure how old that makes it, though. Any ideas?

The watch is a Swiss-made Ball railroad pocket watch. The writing on the dial says:

BALL

OFFICIAL RR STANDARD

CLEVELAND

The case is marked '10kt gold-filled' and was made in Canada.

To the best of my knowledge, the watch was made ca. 1960. Lever-set, crown-wind, 21-jewels, 16 size, 8 adjustments (Six position-adjustments + temperature & isochronism). Comes with a micrometric regulator. The case is screw-on back & bezel. Here's a few more photos, if you're interested:

Caseback:

(This is a HORRIFIC photo. The case is actually really shiny gold, with hardly any brassing at all).

Bezel off, lever out. The lever comes out far enough to set the time, but I'm not confident that it's working as GOOD as might. I'm going to send this to my watchmaker next week to have him service it.

You should be able to read all the stuff inside the watch, in this photo.

The pen cost the princely sum of...$5 (unrestored. Since self-fixed & working fine).

The watch cost $160, down from $200. (The lady let me have it for less, because she said I was sweet!)

Your Conway Stewart 58 is a swell-looking pen! I believe they were made about 1950, when I was eight years old and in grade school.

The Ball railroad watch is pretty. The perfect thing to wear with a three-piece suit. Casually reach into your vest pocket and bring out your pocket watch on a nice chain. Now that would be a nice effect...

Wow, some stunning photography, pens and watches, here are my submissions.

Sea Dweller has sadly made way for other watches.
