hi speedy, not sure if this has been asked before, but will all 3 colors (gold, titanium and chrome) be available for the pre-order or only for the 5000 after the 300. Thanks.

 

other two colors are not available yet. I want to wait until some people get the first pen and tell me how you feel about the pen first then go on next step.

I am trying to airship aournd 600 pens to US and personally flying back to LA around 15 of July to set up the pen on ebay.

Received my two EF examples in today's mail, 8 days after they were sent from Taiwan.

Great experience unpacking a well thought out box system, and one has already been inked and used.

Very happy customer - size and heft of pen is very similar to my Pilot Custom 823

On a different note, Speedy, will it be possible to get the nib units separately?

Because it is so easy to replace the nib assembly, it would be nice to be able to get a set of EF, F and M nibs, and change them as whim demands.

 

What do you think?

I'll second that. Often I need a different nib, for one reason or another, but will not go to the trouble of inking up (and cleaning) another pen for a short time. This would really add a unique benefit to the Twsbi.

At what price point does a nib make sense? If they're $20 plus shipping, would you really prefer to buy nibs instead of buying whole new pens for $40 plus shipping?

 

I understand how convenient this is due to Esterbrook and Pelikan, but I never buy Esterbrook nibs due to how cheap whole pens can be (so I figure why buy a nib when I can get a whole Esterbrook pen with nib). As to Pelikan, I only buy M2xx nibs because a whole pen is around $100 while a nib is a quarter of that. If the nib were more along the lines of half as much, I'd be more likely to just buy whole Pelikan pens. Maybe that's just me.

It would depend on one's financial situation and personal preferences. As an example, I got a Diamond 530 with a medium nib. If I decided I also wanted the fine and extra fine, two more nibs would be $40 giving me a choice of three nibs while two more pens would be $80 giving me a choice of three pens. Forty dollars is much more affordable (in my situation) than $80--on the other hand I would only be able to use one nib at a time. There are a lot of variables, and the math will be different for everone

I guess the big difference would be that you could do everything you can with three nibs and one body if you have three whole pens, while you can only fill three pens with different colors if you have the three bodies to go along with the three nibs. I suppose that means if we use the hypothetical $20 price point for a nib the question becomes whether it's worth $40 to you to be able to fill three different pens with different inks.

It's possible that you may not be able to grasp it. I pride myself on being able to see and understand differing viewpoints (and in this case I can see both), but sometimes I come across someone with an opinion that I just cannot fathom. I can understand they've reasoned things out, but I just cannot see how they've attached any importance to the things they seem to find of most importance and cannot understand how they can ignore the things that logically and practically make the most difference. :blink: I'm sure they are just as confused by me--they've often told me so.

 

But back to this particular subject: in my case (not necessarily anyone else's), if I am carrying more than one pen, it is to have more than one type of pen. Whether or not they have different colours loaded my reason to have more than one pen is to have different nibs and bodies. The Pilot VP for general writing and an Esterbrook with a 9461 nib (or Sheaffer Balance with the fine manifold) for filling out multi-part forms. Possibly more/others if it's sketching with different colours I'm up to. But the point for me is to have different pens. Multiple Diamond 530's wouldn't make a difference to me in my current situation as I would only ever have one inked at a time anyway. I can see the advantage to having three with different nibs (or with the same nib and different colours, &c.) but not the way things are now, for me.

 

Also, I have already ground my TWSBI medium to a cursive italic. It would be nice to have a cheaper route of experimenting with the nibs that have the TWSBI logo on them than to buy an entire pen each time. I know the Bock nibs are available, but I much prefer having the TWSBI logo on a nib intended for a TWSBI pen than having to just work with 'generic' nibs...

It's actually more an issue of understanding the spectrum of uses people have, as you point out. I thank you for sharing your perspective.

 

At the same time, the amateur economist in me wants to make it about what the price point means to somebody. In your case, it sounds as though there might be an appeal to buying just the nib instead of the pen at a much higher price point than there would be for many others. Given your feelings about the issue, a price of $30 for the nib versus $40 for the pen might still make the nib purchase what you'd go for. For somebody else, a nib at $5 might be too much -- they might prefer the whole pen.

 

A related issue for TWSBI might be what they calculate to maximize their short term revenue and their long term prospects in the industry. Selling a reasonably priced replacement nib might actually cost them pen sales in the short term but may earn them the love of users who would then become TWSBI devotees over the long haul.
