Nibs

@BamaPen Your nib looks like lacquered on the photo. I also bought a black nib from JoWo, which is called Black Oxidization, to try, but I haven't tried it yet.

Andrew_L on the Jowo web site they show two black nibs with pictures showing somewhat different appearance. One is more flat black, while the other is a glossy black. The written descriptions of the two are the same, but I would think that one is the Black Oxidization and the other is black lacquer. I've been buying black Jowo nibs from two different sources in the US, and all of them have had the same look as the one in the picture in my post. Neither source has offered the other type of black. Perhaps it is only available in Europe?

Maybe. Or maybe this is a new design.
I've had a few bad experiences with lacquer nibs including Conklin (JoWo) Black lacquered, so I don't like lacquer nibs. I bought one black oxide and one ruthenium nib to try. Black Oxide is difficult to photograph correctly for right viewing like by eyes from behind the reflection of the light around. By the eyes, it looks like hardened steel in oil or under-tempered steel, with light blue reflection)). The ruthenium nib on the photo looks like an ordinary steel one, but by eyes have a slightly yellow tint that is not visible on the photo.

This is the same nib but with different lights.

By the way, looking at the photo, your nib has an extra gap between tip halves.

What’s bigger, the Montblanc #9 nib or the Pilot #50?

The S.T. DuPont Eternity XL nib the same size as a Montblanc #6, which is the same as the Pilot #30?

What is this #9 MB nib? Do you mean the Montblanc 149 nib or something else? Here is a thread about Namiki #50 nib and here is a little bit. It seems that Namiki #50 will be larger, but has a rough shape like Pelikan M1000, and MB #8 has a much more elegant shape, especially vintage ones.

First, thank you for the comparison photo.

The way I understand, the “9” in 149 means it’s a #9 nib. In a vintage 149, the nib size was a #8?

Montblanc has a #4 (144) and #6 (146) nibs. I’ve also wondered why the next nib size up isn’t a “148”, staying consistent with even numbers. Is the modern 149 nib (#9) so much bigger proportionally to the 144 and 146 that Montblanc chose to call it a 149 for accuracy? Or, is the modern 149 nib also actually a size #8 nib just like a vintage 149, and it’s Montblanc marketing calling it a size #9 nib?

Yes, I agree, #50 nib and M1000 nib do not look nearly as good has the 149 nib or the Sailor King of Pen (KOP) nib. Hopefully I can track down a photo that has a KOP nib side by side with a modern 149 nib.

Not quite so. I understand that you are equating the vintage classification of MB pens which included class, filling system type and nib size with the modern numbering system, but it doesn't work. Where to attribute 145, 147? )). The modern model 149, like and vintage ones 149, has a nib of modern size #8 and although the manufacturers themselves do not have a general classification of nib sizes, fans of fountain pens classify them by the size of the feed and apparently this is not official, but only among themselves to understand each other.

I understand it to be the length of the pens.

Add lightness and simplicate.

Hmm, the Pilot #30 nib looks like the size and shape as a Sailor KOP nib! It looks great to me with its wide shoulders and curve down to its base. The 149 curves much less than I thought as shown in this comparison photo.

They are very similar to the 149 in the part that sticks out from the section. Dark reflections on the sides of nibs that have a more spherical surface may appear on the impression. Vintage nib MB 149 is much more beautiful. I don't have a KOP for comparison.
