Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

I like using vintage Nikon glass on my 550D. I already have a 50/1.4 which is a great lens for portraits but wanted something on the cheap for macro. Thus I discovered the Micro Nikkor 55/3.5 which is probably sharpest lens I have. Here are some shots I made today using the micro Nikkor.

First up a couple of retips by Greg Minuskin.

I don't have the gear to get the nice photos some of you do, but here are a couple interesting nibs anyway.

Here's what a Pelikan M800 nib that has been dropped tip down onto the hardwood floor looks like. Note the fatal (from an ink flow perspective) amount of light visible between the underside of the nib and the feed (right side pic.)

A fairly scarce Falcon nib on an older Waterman (a BHR 12, IIRC.)

3-tine Music nib from a late 1930's Waterman. This is a fantastic nib to use, but quite a pain to keep aligned.

The nib and a writing sample:

Don't feel bad. I'm old; I'm meh about most things.

Ouch!

At first glance I thought it was some kind of custom waverly nib by Pelikan.

Thanks for sharing this here - I have never seen anything like this before; perhaps as rare as Montblanc's Quail nib. What does the horse shoe symbol signify?

Here is a picture I took today of a simple Esterbrook LJ with 9556 nib. Just got it in the mail today and I am happy with the way it writes.

Hi markiv,

M800:

At the time, (after I stopped swearing) I noticed how elegant the curve was.

Waterman nib:

I don't know what the symbol signifies, or actually that it is even intended as a symbol. I think I've seen earlier, dip pen Falcon nibs with that pattern in them. Maybe it is there for rigidity?

Regarding scarcity, I have seen a few of these. They are shown in at least the 1902 Waterman catalog. In the early days of Waterman, there was both a broad offering of nibs at a given time, and also fairly rapid change in the styles of their nibs.

I would love to find a horseshoe (vent hole) nib, which are quite scarce. They are shown in the 1897 catalog in both #4 and #5 sizes.

Best Regards, greg

I finally received the pen I was waiting for forever. The packet managed to reach the sort facility (4 miles from my address) only to be rerouted to New Jersey angry.gif. I thought they are probably sending it back to the seller overseas but sanity prevailed and they sent it back to the correct address. I knew it was a big pen but was floored by the size of the nib - it is perhaps the biggest nib in my collection. Shown below is a group picture of it alongside with some of the larger nibs. The MB #6 nib, which is of decent size, seems puny. Oh I forgot to mention - it is a Matador 998 pen which was probably the biggest in the series and is second from left.

L to R: Rider, Matador 998, Chilton, MB#6 Safety, Miesterklasse, Soennecken Präsident.
