Rotring Core

OK, I just flushed the heck out of this pen, first with water then with water ammonia and then with water again. It seems to be doing better. I'll see if it keeps up.

I just got my Core today, a Technor. I got it from Made2Shop, and it did not come with a converter, but a standard international converter works. I filled it with Noodlers Blue-Black and it writes well. I think the appearance is what we used to call "camp"--so bad that it's good. I suspect I won't like it in my shirt pocket due to the size. I have an XS, and I beg to differ with all I've seen written about this nib. It writes smoothly, but to me that nib is closer to a medium nib, not an XF. My Sheaffer Prelude F nib, Aurora XF nib, and Waterman F nib all write a finer line. I'll use it tomorrow and see if I can tolerate this wide of a nib.

I put a capful in about 2 ounces of water.  There is something else you can use instead of a converter.  I've forgotten what it's called, but it's used to suction water out of the ear.  You can pick one up at a pharmacy I'm sure.  Several have said they use these instead of converters.  I got the idea of flushing the nib by making the water and ammonia flow both ways through the nib from someone on this forum who said he does this to every new pen before filling it with ink.  I've had several new pens that didn't flow well, and this has worked on all but one.  I hope it works.

edited to add:  It's called an ear syringe, a rubber bulb used to irrigate the ear and remove earwax.

I've also used a regular 10cc syringe, squeezing gently, with the needle part close to, but not affixed where the converter would go. Obviously, I do this with no needle attached. It increases the flow just enough to give a tad more good fluid flow than a converter. I've not tried the ear syringe though.

You can get syringes, without needles, from most doctors. Vets also will usually give them to you no charge if you're visiting with a favorite pet.

I did the ammonia solution wash with my Cores (I've got two). They both work like a dream. They are great pens, even if they look wierd.

Spring and love arrived on a bird's sweet song. "How does that little box sound like birds and laughter?" I asked the gypsy violinist. He leaned back, pointing to his violin. "Look inside, you'll see the birdies sing to me" soft laughter in his voice. "I hear them, I can almost see them!", I shouted as his bow danced on the strings. "Ah yes" he said, "your heart is a violin." Shony Alex Braun

I realize i am very late to this party, but can anyone post a writing sample comparing the fine to the medium?

Yeah, it's a funky pen alright. Some call it the "Klingon" pen. It does look that brutish and rather stubborn, like a Klingon. ;)

I just recently got one of these:

It's a Rotring Rive. Not bad, actually. The nib is very much like a Rotring 600 nib, without the breather hole. But the 600 nib is better quality. Still, for less than $10, it wasn't bad. And I think it looks like it came off the set of "Farscape" (a Sci-fi channel series), perhaps from the pocket of Scorpius:

I to bought the Core. It was the first FP i bought, having in my possession my grandfather's Parker 21. I bought the Core however as a sketching pen rather than a pen to write much with. The grip isn't too bad once you use it a while. It seems to take quite a bit of abuse. And you always get comments from people who see it. I use Swisher's Midnight black with it. The nib is not in the least flexible like a dip pen put it's sturdy as heck! A good knock around pen.

Just when I thought the Core was the uglyest thing Rotring made along comes the Rotring Rive!! I think the Core holds the distinction of the only pen that someone offered to me free that I said no thanks. He even sent it home with me to try out and I brought it back!

In another topic on the Cores, a few people mentioned that they thought the orange thingies were causing leaks. I popped mine out (they can be popped in again easily) and stuck 'em in a drawer. The pens work just fine without them.

The orange thingies function as a mechanism to make removal of the short disposible cartridges easier.

My Cores -fountain pen and ballpoint- are very kind to my arthritic hands. Alas, prices have gone up,somewhat, but not to an unreasonable degree considering the passage of time from the original posts.

Would love to see these -or any fountain pen- at a Big Lots!
