Has Anyone Heard Of Henry Simpole?

This evening, I've been booked to give a talk about the 'Potted History of the Fountain Pen', to the League of Jewish Women, fairly locally. I have spoken to them before, but it was quite a few years ago since I was last there.

Anyway, I've just made the supper, [shepherds Pie], and something for pudding, so we will have to eat earlier than usual, and then I will be off to give my talk.

I just hope that they enjoy it!!!  I also hope that I can remember how I last interwove my story about how I got into Fountain Pens, with the topic of the History of the Fountain Pen, like I did the last time when I gave my talk.

No doubt they will be as entranced as I was the last time I heard it....;)

It really is a good story.

I'm pleased to say, that my talk to the League of Jewish Women went extremely well, I talked for about an hour, and the questions came thick and fast from the audience, to the extent that the chair-person had to curtail the proceedings because they had to conduct their actual meeting in the normal way, and they were running out of time to fit everything in!

There's no doubt about it, the more 'personal aspect' of such a talk, seems to make it far more interesting to people who are not necessarily 'Pen fanatics!'

I think that there were about forty people there, and all of them wanted to take a business card before the meeting ended, so quite possibly there will be a few repairs coming in in the next few weeks! :P

I think I might treat myself to a meal at the local fish restaurant today, that sounds like a good idea!!! :eureka:

Sadly though, they have stopped doing lobster though, but I'm sure I will find something else to whet my appetite! :puddle:

A few months ago, a gentleman from 'Down Under' ordered a Gold Snake pattern pen from me, and seeing as I hadn't got one in stock at the time, I had to make one up from 'scratch' for him, he was very patient, and I sent it off to him about 2 months after his order was received.

After he got it, he contacted me to tell me how pleased he was with it, but that he was experiencing some problems with the flow of ink from the nib, but that he would wait and see if it settled down! Unfortunately however, it didn't! :hmm1: [He wasn't angry about it, but he obviously wanted it fixed.]

Anyway, the long and short of it was that I told him to send the pen back to me, and that I would sort the problem out.

I spoke to Graham [down in the West Country, the last time I was down there, and left the pen with him.] I happened to have a 'new old stock' feed from a 1950's Parker Maxima Duofold, which exactly fitted the nib size, so the instructions were to make up a section that would exactly hold the feed and nib, well, he has done it, and I have been test-driving it over the last two days, and it is behaving itself perfectly, [i'm very pleased to say!]

The incredible thing is just how patient he has been about the performance of the pen. Generally, 'Pen People' are very understanding I find!

PS. He has been 'fell-walking' in the Highlands of Scotland for the last week, being bitten by the ferocious midges up there! [very strange form of pastime, I think! But I suppose it does take 'all sorts!] So his pen will be returned to him while he is still in the UK!

"Indeed!" She said, knowingly!

"So how are the Faeries coming along?"

The 'Fairies Series', are coming along just fine, thank you!

Four of them have been curled, and silver soldered, but one of them is rather 'distorted', and will need to go back to see Uncle Lionel, who is probably the leading light on correcting such problems! There is also a 'late-comer', which is still as yet uncurled! This is due to the fact that it wasn't finished when I took the others up to Hatton Garden, to get them soldered!

Am I right in assuming that I am being pressured in to finishing this series? :glare:

I wasn't aware that there was any urgency regarding these pens!

You must bear in mind that 'Fairies' [please note the correct English spelling!] are pretty 'laid back' individuals, they don't like being 'rushed'!

No doubt all will be revealed in due course! I think I had one too many, of Ghost Plane's milk shakes last night!!! :P

Having seen some of the flat pieces of yours pre-curl and pre-solder, I must say that the photos here just do not do them justice. But to imagine going from flat to a pen... wow!

Tenney, you have hit the nail on the head there!

The reason for the remaining 'flat' overlay from the Fairy [note the correct spelling!] Series, is mainly due to the fact that it is very convenient to carry one or two of my latest overlay cut-outs in my shirt pocket, to show people that I meet during the day. In fact there is a definite reluctance on my part to 'complete' my latest overlays before I have done another one, then I carry that one around with me for a while! :headsmack:

S'funny really, I hadn't really thought about it before, but there you are! :hmm1:  "Stranger than fiction!"

"The word fairy derives from Middle English faierie (also fayerye, feirie, fairie), a direct borrowing from Old French faerie (Modern French féerie) meaning the land, realm, or characteristic activity (i.e. enchantment) of the legendary people of folklore and romance called (in Old French) faie or fee (Modern French fée). This derived ultimately from Late Latin fata (one of the personified Fates, hence a guardian or tutelary spirit, hence a spirit in general); cf. Italian fata,Portuguese fada, Spanish hada of the same origin." ~Wikipedia

happyberet.gif Not being a smarty pants, but not everything is English in origin....roflmho.gif

And no, no pressure as such....just curiosity of a kind....so to speak....tongue.gif

Love the way Wikipedia ignores the Celtic Fae, an alternative to Sidhe, the correct name for the denizens of the Summerlands.

OK! Both you 'Googling' smarty pant's!!!

In England, they are spelt in the English way, Ie:- Fairies!!!

Don't tell me, over there, you spell it one way Monday 'thru' Friday, then another way at the weekends!!!

Sounds a bit like a 'Pick and mix' to me, but there you go! :glare:

Don't have to Google family history. When you're raised on stories of the family bain sidhe you learn how the Sassenach mangled the Gaelic while still a babe. :P

Off to use the polishing cloth on the Spirit. Seems the 24" of rain left things a bit tarnished.

I see!! Year! I get the picture, it's all our fault is it?

The British, I mean! :hmm1:

Is it all our fault that you Americans decided to mis-spell all those words like 'thru', and stuff like that! :gaah:

Tell me, the next time you see a "Fairy" down at the bottom of your garden [sorry, "Back Yard!"] would you mind asking said "Fairy" how they would spell their name?

That'll settle it, [unless the little suckers can't write, come to think of it, I've never seen them with such a thing as a pen in their hot little hands! :hmm1:

"Vivre la difference," I suppose!

Around these parts they tend to text, but I'm hoping to introduce fountain pens any day now. ;)
