Has Anyone Heard Of Henry Simpole?

I am pleased to report that the 'fairies series' of overlays have been curled and silver-soldered, and now just need to be 'finished', then they will be sent off to dear Graham for him to make up the base-pens to fit them.

So, hopefully it won't be too long before some pictures will appear here when Neal has done his wonderful work photographing them!

Thanks for posting the images of the Ants Pen BTW Neal, your work is the best!

I finnaly got to met Mr. Henry Simpole...

That's true! I'm a Portuguese medical doctor spending 2 months in London for an intership at the Royal Brompton. I'm really interested in Intersticial Lung Dideases, and if any of you has the unfortune of having one of these, you can feel a little happier by knowing that the Brompton is probably the best place in the world for being treated. They write the guidelines...

So, on my second saturday I decided to pay a visit to Mr Simpole. And what a surprise. As his very own name indicates, at least in my native language, Simpole means unpretentious I was looking for this Doric I purseu for a few months, but we ended up talking for almost 2 hours. Mr Simpole told me about the beginning of his passion , explained me some particular aspects of the manufacturing procedure and guided me through his vast work. I allready knew some of his work from the internet, but belive me, when you see it in person, it's something really special, that will predure in your memory for long. When we finnished, I actually felt a bit embarassed for the time I've consumed. Sorry about that.

Two weeks after I returned, this time with my wife (I think good things should be shared!) and she was also particulary amazed with the eye expression of a lady in one of the not yet installed overlay. This time I took a pen whose nib needed repair. After a short email asking for help on the repair here in London, Mr Simpole promptly replied, saying he could do it himself. Such generosity!

So, if any of you come to London, make sure to pay him a visit at Portobello Market on Saturday morning. And it's not only talk! A Vast collection of vintage pens, for those that like appreciate them.

I left you with our picture together! And sorry about the poor English!

Best regards

Gustavo

Gustavo,

I'm very pleased to read such a glowing report of your first, and then your last visit to my stand at Portobello.

If you are reading this, then you might also be pleased to know that the Mont Blanc 146 that needed some work doing to the nib, has been done, and will be there tomorrow, for you to pick up.

By the way, the 'eye expression of the lady's face' was the 'Risque Lady' overlay, still unfinished, but very beautiful [i think so anyway!]

The funny thing about the Jubilee Concert, was that I was one of the lucky people who had been selected, to be offered two tickets for the big occasion a couple of months ago, but when I read the details about having to be 'cleared' by 'Security' some four hours before the concert started, I decided to give the tickets to someone else, who wouldn't mind giving up four hours of their time, and would enjoy the concert, probably more than I would!

Surely they've forgotten about that little indiscretion with Yevgeny Ivanov by now?

What the heck did you want to bring that up for?

That was a long time ago, man!!!

I've paid my debt to society for that little indiscretion! She certainly looked older than 16 anyway!

What I can't understand is how come they knew that we were in the broom cupboard in the first place! :ltcapd: But it was a very odd place to have put the CCTV camera!!!

I think he was the 'Naval Attache' working for the Russians, but I think that he had his sights on a different type of 'navel' attachments! [if you know what I mean!!!]

As for the man in the mask, I can't really help you there!

But as I said before, this all happened a very long time ago, and I've paid my debt to society for that little indiscretion!

I'm jealous! :notworthy1: :notworthy1: :notworthy1:

But then I would probably end up tying Henry into the comfy chair and holding him hostage until we could create a few more pens together.

This was followed by a visit from 'Tenney', who had just landed from USA, and had managed to catch an earlier flight in order to catch me before I left at my usual time of about 2.00pm. He turned up at about 1.30pm and we went over pretty well all of my selection of pens, he picked out about 5, or 6 that he wanted, I quoted him and he seemed very happy with what we agreed upon [money-wise!] for them. I'm pretty sure that he was a happy bunny by the time he left, because he wanted to take a photograph before he actually departed, so hopefully, he will be posting it on here shortly after he returns to the States! [i've got my usual inane grin on my face!]

I got back and am almost caught up. I was quite thankful to have been able to catch an earlier flight to be able to meet the infamous Mr. Simpole. Here's what his shop looks like as you walk down the aisle towards it:

What a wonderful collection of pens so carefully restored by a master... and then there's all of his own custom work too! (Yes, hearing that "pop" on the Onoto Heritage is amazing).

A happy bunny? Indeed! But I could have stayed hours longer as it was far too difficult to narrow down the enticements... Here we are nearing closing time.

My thanks again to Henry. It is so great to have finally met him and find that he's a true gentleman! If anyone ever has the chance of buying a pen from him, please do not hesitate to do so!!!!

As for the Jubilee... I, too, am amazed that Henry didn't accept the four hours of delay for a once-in-a-lifetime event. To this visitor, I found that the Jubilee mostly meant massive difficulties getting around London (and amazingly huge crowds wherever you ended up). Although, the Visconti display at Harrods was wonderful to see...

Pffft! I think the author has a thing for the Interrogator's Handbook. Not my cup of tea.

I prefer willing participation from my subjects, er, partners. ;)

I've just got back from Portobello, having worked my way there and back on the 'tube', avoiding the 'Planned Engineering Works' on the Central Line between Bethnal Green and Marble Arch! It's all good fun really!

Anyway, after a bit of a slow start, two of my 'repair customers' came in to collect their pens, including Gustavo, who seemed very happy with the 146 Mont Blanc, which needed the nib re-shaping, and re-setting.

Then a gentleman from Argentina came in to meet me, he had certainly heard about my work, ans after looking over quite a few of the pen designs, he settled on a silver Myrtle pen with a broad italic nib. :P

He seemed very happy with his purchase, and so was I!!!

LWES 2021

I know it's early still, but for those who wish to meet up with His Nibs amongst his contemporaries on that side of the pond....One day only and a Saturday to boot.

Maybe some faeries will be in tow....or a scantily clad lady or two? drool.gif
