Has Anyone Heard Of Henry Simpole?

Hmm. I don't remember a "Lady Frances" in Lord Denning's report into the matter of Henry Simpole, a respected pen-maker with an unfortunate predeliction for warm fuzzies, and the unfortunate incident with the KGB agent and the society osteopath.

We should inform the Privy Council, forthwith!

Troglokev,

I think you have got me confused with someone else!!!

I'm the one who knows nothing about computers, who spends too much of his time repairing old fountain pens, and not enough time spent rubbing shoulders with the aristocracy, [no matter how well connected they might be,even KGB operators! ]

The meeting up with the dear Lady Frances today went very well, and I do believe that she will be very happy with her Fountain Pen.

So, to the end of a nearly perfect day....................................

"And there we must leave him, busy at his workbench, doing a restoration project on a vintage pen that someone has sent to him, a very happy man!" :P

Well, another week over, and it was topped off by a very good PortobelloRoad day, what with Frances coming to pick up her pen, and a reasonable amount of business as well made the day worthwhile despite my jet-lagged induced tiredness during the course of the day!

On Friday, I posted the Dunhill Desk pen Namiki [that I had repaired] back to it's owner, and this morning there was an E-mail thanking me for sending it to his relative [which he had asked me to do!] but that he wouldn't be coming over to pick it up for quite some time, so I gave him instructions regarding getting on to this thread, and he has seen the pictures that Neal had posted here, he was delighted with the results! It has made my day!!!

Amongst the pens that I bought yesterday, was a vintage Mont Blanc 244 in green marble! It could do with a clean up and a service, but other than that it is pretty good, so no prises for guessing what I will be doing today, before I get on with the Onoto Overlays!

Well I've uploaded the pics to the website, but this tablet has certain limitations, so I will post some from my work computer tomorrow.

In the mean time I have developed a passion for all things Peter Pan....well not the Disney version. The wee tike of Kensington Gardens has captured my heart! And the Arthur Rackham illustrations of the early printings are so lovely. I need a copy of it now. :cloud9:

Chris,

That's one of the drawbacks of playing the part of the 'Super-Hero', ridding the world of 'unpleasantness', it takes it's toll you know!!!

We actually did go to a 'Red Lobster' restaurant while we were there in Columbus, but unfortunately they had run out of 'live' lobsters on the evening when we went there, but I ate really quite well while I was over there.

But there is no doubt about it, I'm looking a lot 'fuller' than I did a couple of years ago, have a look at the pictures at the beginning of this thread!

Back to the chasing of the 'Warm Fuzzies!'

esterbex, thanks for the pictures! I would love to visit one of these pen shows in the near future. If you only had one to go to, which one would you recommend and why?

I'm afraid I am not qualified to answer that question. I've only been to three. Henry or another pen passionista who has much more pen show experience may be able to help you there.

I would guess you'd have to consider what your passion is----vintage, modern or both. The shows I've attended were very small, small and medium in size, and catered more to the vintage crowd. I'm enamoured of vintage pens, but modern pens with old school filling mechanisms also get my attention. Large shows like DC and LA usually have lots of both. Haven't been to those....yet. ;)

That would be a good thread to start in Meetings and Events!

Pelikan FP,

Perhaps I could step in here, firstly [as Esterbex has already said] you have to decide what type of pens you are looking for, whether mainly vintage, or modern pens. From Canada, Nova Scotia, I would have thought that the Chicago Pen Show would be 'fairly' close, and it is [or used to be] one of the largest of the shows, although it has been quite a few years since I went there. It happens in May, which has the advantage of being more affordable [travel-wise] being 'off-season'. Unless its character has changed considerably since I last went there, I think that it would be your best choice, as long as you can wait that long before you go! It is a fairly large show, so the chances are that it would cater for what you would be looking for in a Pen Show; Los Angeles, is also 'out of season',[being in February], and it is a big one, but from what I have heard, it is mainly Modern Pen makers, but that is not to say that there won't be any vintage pens there, you just might have to look around a bit harder!!!

I hope that is a help, [bTW, I do not have any affiliation with either of these two shows, other than the fact that I used to go to both of them quite frequently!]

Truffle Finder.

PS. I have been to three Pen Shows this last year, [all comparatively smaller than LA, or Chicago] Columbus Ohio, Raleigh N.Carolina, and Little Rock, Arkansas, they were all really good shows, very friendly atmosphere, but they are smaller than the three big ones, namely L.A. Chicago, and Washington in August], which is without doubt probably the biggest, but at that time of year, it will cost you considerably more to get there! And it is very hot and humid!!!]

I am so glad that you are not starving yourself Henry! The Lobster season here has started very badly........... where are they all???

I hope you are collecting air-miles with all your visits.........now, if only pens collected them for their owners/buyers/sellers............... :notworthy1: wouldn't that be wonderful?

I can't help with pen shows.........having only ever attended the Melbourne Show in 2009. That is minute compared to the others in USA, and even then I nearly went into melt-down.
