I don't think there is an award for the 1000th posting!

Sorry about that!!!

It's always nice to make your mark in the wet concrete though, isn't it?

PS. Who is this George character anyway?

Just read through the whole thread today - well - most of it. Henry, your overlays are exquisite. How thick is the silver sheet you use, and what keeps them anchored to the pen? Thanks,

Dan

Hi Dan,

I have used anything from 0.5 to 0.7mm.Most of the overlays are friction fitted [to the older pens, but the newer 'made-to-measure' pens are kept in place by the blind-caps, which are at the top of the cap, and at the back-end of the barrel, there are one or two exceptions to this, but simple 'glue' works well!

Are you the 'Daniel' who I knew way back in London? When I was doing overlays for pens such as Fords?

Anyway, many thanks for the compliment, I'm pleased that you have enjoyed reading this thread. I am planning to attend the Columbus Ohio Pen Show BTW, perhaps I will see you there!

Henry---Not that Dan, but would love to meet you sometime and see some of your work in person. I live in Washington state, and there are no pen shows close to here. There used to be one in Portland Oregon, but not for the last few years. bawl.gif

I used to live in Ohio back in 1970 - '71, would have been just a hop, skip and a jump to get to Columbus back then, now it's quite another matter. Any plans to attend the Chicago show next year? I have some relatives there, might be able to combine a visit to them with the show.

No, I'm afraid not, Chicago is a little out of my 'play-area', I used to go to it some years ago, but nowadays I have a strange attraction towards places like Little Rock, Arkanas, but one of the reasons that I'm going to Columbus, is that it turns out that I have a distant cousin who lives there,so I am looking forward to meeting her and her husband when I go to the Pen Show in November. Her Grandfather [or possibly her Great-grandfather!] immigrated to the USA in the late 1800's, and his wife decided to change their name from Simpole by the time they got to register their arrival at Ellis Island, apparently because the name sounded too much like 'simple'!!! [Nothing like family loyalty, is there?]

Anyway, thanks for your comments!

I went to see Mr. Simpole at Portobello Road one Saturday in July and bought, at a most reasonable price, a maroon PFM with a factory-italic nib. It writes like a dream of course.

Seeing him is ever a convivial and educational experience. He is one of my favourite bits of London, rather in a category with Sir John Soane's Museum - both gentlemanly, understated, timeless and fascinating, yet still an international attraction for the cognoscenti.

Thank you very much!

Will you be going to the London Pen Show? Sunday 2nd October 2011, Kensington Town Hall, it would be a pleasure to see you again.

Henry, I want to again jump in and mention how much I'm enjoying the Onoto Overlay No. 1 -- I posted a full review in the Pen Review section a few weeks ago. One of the things I'm amazed by is how "3-dimensional" the overlay is -- in other words, it isn't just a pattern cut out of a sheet of silver and wrapped around a pen (as some modern overlays are). In yet other words, the overlay isn't the same thickness everywhere - the edges of the pattern are worked to become increasingly thin - just like real leaves. And you added veins (etching?). You must spend a great deal of time on each pen to create such a realistic effect.

Sorry I can't explain what I mean any better, but hope my photos showed how intricate the pattern is. It's a lovely pen -- the overlay pattern reminds me of the patterns on vintage silver flatware. HP

alas, i shall miss the show as my Simpole PFM and i are still working in Afghanistan, however I hope to see you in Portobello when next i return home to London.

Not just any old museum, mind you, but that most exquisite, idiosyncratic, personal, and often unvisited museum, Sir John Soane's. It was part of his home, and reflects his boundless curiosity and civility. you are not like the Tate Modern (Heaven forfend) or the more famous museums heaving with visitors and littered with their crisp-packets. The few who visit Sir John's home know why they go there and are never disappointed.

There are plenty of museums you wouldn't want to be compared to: the Ned Kelly museum, the Museum of U.S. Tragedy and the Surgeon's Hall museum spring to mind. Sadly, Tom Gaskin's Cypress Knee museum could not survive the competition with DisneyWorld, and the Roy Rogers museum failed to keep the spirit of the West alive. Then, of course, there's the Celebrity Underwear museum in Brussels, the Museum of Questionable Medical Devices, the British Lawnmower museum, and how could we forget the Spam Museum in our quest for collections of oddities?

The Soane Museum seems quite appropriate for Henry, though.

All these comments about museums [prestigious or awful!] is very flattering, but it reminds me of something that a very good friend of mine, many years ago, said [as he was leaving!] "that I was an anachronism!". I waited till he had gone, and looked it up in my dictionary, then I waited till he would have arrived back to his home, and phoned him up, and just said "You're right!!!"

I have just looked out and found my dictionary, and looked it up again, he was right! It says:-Mistake of time, by which something is put in wrong period; something out of date!

So, I think I will get back to listening to my LP record collection of Cream and 'Boogie on down!'

See y'awll!

Henry, I just read through the first few pages and your website. Magnificent. I now have to figure which of your gallery pens to get, and silver vs. gold. The snake's eyes...what stones? Also, wondering how the overall weight comes out for a pen like that, and how the balance ends up in your hand?

Also you should put your website link in your signature here so people can get to you easier.

With the new FPN rules, now I REALLY don't know what to put in my signature.

More compliments!!! I think I will have to lay down in a darkened room!!!

The Snake Pen's eyes are real Emeralds, and you might be pleased to know that I am in the process of making up two more of them in Silver, [if you wanted a Gold one, I would have to make one up from 'scratch' but that wouldn't be a problem.]

Regarding the weight of the Snake pens, they are as follows:-

Silver complete, with cap, 50grms.

without cap, 28grms.

Gold, with cap ,66grms.

without cap 42grms.

Personally, I think that it is not necessary to post the cap whilst writing with the pen, it doesn't improve the handling of it, except to make it heavier!

With regard to the idea of putting my web-site address on my Avatar, I simply don't know how to do that! I'm a real 'dummy' when it comes to that kind of 'cyber' technology!!! Did someone speak about an 'anachronism' here a while ago?!!!

You deserve all the praise. I figured they were emeralds, but didn't want to assume. Thank you for the weights. Generally I prefer the length of a posted pen, but have used them unposted. Probably would be the gold snake.

Regarding your signature, follow these guidelines:

1) Click on your name in this thread which takes you to your profile page.

2) Find the button on the right that says "Edit My Profile" and click

3) Choose "Change Signature" from left menu which takes you to a posting type edit box.

4) Add in your website: http://www.henrysimpole.com and click the "Save" button below the edit box. It adds your signature information to the bottom of all current and past posts
