Has Anyone Heard Of Henry Simpole?

I posted this over in a "flow issues" thread on the CS forum, but I thought I'd post it here since the nib in question belongs to my new Simpole. Maybe some of the experts that frequent this thread can help to shed some light on this blorping curiosity:

I seem to be having flow issues with a new CS nib. It writes perfectly for a few pages, and then a big blorp of ink floods the feed and drops onto the page. It's acting kind of like an eyedropper pen just before it runs empty--you know that tell-tale blorp of excess ink just before the pen needs refilling--but I am using the converter and the pen is about 80% full. This is the second time it has happened, using two different kinds of inks (Noodler's and Montblanc). Neither blorps occurred directly after filling, and I always blot the excess ink from the feed after filling anyway. The blorp lasts for a word or two and then flow returns to normal. I don't think it could be a pressure or temperature change as the pen has remained indoors, in the same room of my house. I don't know what would cause such blorping... any ideas?

Regarding your nib/feed ink-flow problem that you appear to be having with the pen you recently purchased, Henry will be pleased to replace the nib unit for you, including the shipping costs.

This appears to be a problem which can be solved, and will be as quickly as possible. Just unscrew the nib unit, and send it back to him, and he will replace it for you.

Truffle, please thank Henry for me. Profusely. He is very nice, and I really appreciate his very good customer service. I contacted Bryant a couple of days ago when the problem appeared, because I got the pen from him, and he is going to take care of the problem.

I can report that the two Onoto pieces have been 'sprued-up', and are ready to be cast.

It shouldn't be long now!

Some photographs will appear here as soon as they can be done.

News just in........

The Onoto pieces are at the casters, and should be ready to be picked up on Friday, or at the latest on Monday of next week.

Graham has taken delivery of plenty of the rods [in black] for the base-pens, so it shouldn't be long before the samples are ready for the photography, :bunny01: :bunny01: :bunny01:

Hi Repreive,

You're not alone, if that is any consolation!

My pen's nib unit was also faulty and does the same thing. A replacement unit has been promised to be sent, too.

Meanwhile, counting the days until the pen can write. Looks like it will be next week.... sigh!

Miranda, I hope your nib issues get sorted quickly. Mine is on its way to Michael Masuyama, so I should have it back in a few weeks.

I have some good news, Henry has received the sample cast overlays back from Hatton Garden, for the Onoto pen, which they commissioned him to do recently.

Despite being very delicate designs, there were no 'mis-casts', so work can proceed as planned.

Hopefully, the base-pens will be made up within a week, and can be photographed shortly after that.

Watch this space!

Here is a link to the Onoto newsletter - http://www.luketom.c...ot/new/october/

and here is a photo of the Onoto overlay from that newsletter -

"Quote.........

Shhhh! Keep this one under your hat! We are working on a new sterling silver Art Nouveau overlay design for a brand new Onoto pen due for release in December. Celebrated silversmith Henry Simpole has come up with a stunning design with an intriguing hidden message.

As you are probably aware, there is a fine tradition of Onoto silver overlays dating back to the 1920s and 1930s, so this is a very significant part of the 'new' Onoto tradition – linking the heritage and history of Onoto past and present. Here is a sneak preview of the first pierced overlay prototype, sitting alongside one of Henry's previous masterworks…

Look very closely and you’ll see the secret message entwined in the design!

We showed the design to a small number of interested collectors at the London Pen Show – and immediately took several reservations!

The overlay is likely to be produced in a relatively small limited edition – after all, each one is hand-made by Henry so if you would like to make a no-obligation reservation at this stage, we will make sure you are the first to receive details of the completed work.

I must apologise, I didn't realise that Onoto had used your photograph in their newsletter, they had taken a few photographs when they saw the cut-outs at the London Pen Show, and I had assumed that they were theirs! I suppose it is a compliment to your photographic skills though, but I do apologise for this oversight on my part.

Update: I have my pen back as of yesterday. Michael Masuyama adjusted the nib and feed perfectly, and all is now working as it should. I highly recommend Michael's work should anyone require a nibmeister. Bryant was also delightful to work with (as always) and helped get the nib issue solved as quickly as possible.

Miranda, I hope your replacement nib arrives soon! Let us know how things turn out.

Reprieve, I am very pleased that you have received your pen back and that it is working. Are you enjoying it? Is it living up to your expectations?

I'm sorry you had to go through all this drama, but at least Bryant and Michael got your problem resolved quickly.

My nib is still somewhere known only to itself. It's three to five day journey from England to Australia is now in its second week. No wonder the British lost their Empire if this is a typical example of their efficiency!

In the meantime, by comparison, I've had deliveries from Germany, Italy, France, USA, Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong being made within a few days. {buying more pens?, no.... of course not......drops pen whilst crossing fingers behind back. well, some of it was ink, and some pens are for presents.]

Take care, and joyous writing!

Heard of Mister Simpole? I have seen him in the flesh (I mean he was fully clothed at the time, in Portobello Market). It was rather like going to a provincial art fair and finding Louis Comfort Tiffany running a stained-glass stall. Or Vermeer amiably selling a few paintings.

  • 1 month later...

I may be jumping the gun here, but I just thought I would bring you up to date with the news.

Onoto Pen Company commissioned Henry to do an overlaid pen for them, initially 50 pens are being made.

They are nearly finished, and hopefully they should be available fairly shortly.

If anyone is interested, Onoto have started a newsletter, which gives more information. [www.onoto.com]

See Y'awl!!!

It appears that I have 'jumped the gun' somewhat! I have been informed that if you click on the panel for their newsletter, it is due to be distributed tomorrow.

I hope that is a help!
