What a lively place this thread is just now - and I offer my welcome to 'sumoshogo' too! My internet life has undergone some major changes lately, and will continue to until we are settled in Cornwall - so my hosting site had to go, and a new temporary one made available until we move.........so abject apologies for any pics I posted using that hosting site! FPN now allows a much easier way to post photos - so I hadn't worried about it really.

I love the Dunhill-Namiki pens - I too love Japanese pens - and if you ever feel the need to have your Nashiji touched up you may want to contact Ernest Shin of Hakumin Urushi - I have a Parker "51" that is now a sublime Nashiji-nuri delight!

Once I stopped looking at the body of your pens I was just entranced with the nibs!!! :puddle: Do you have any writing samples...........please don't say you don't use your beautiful pens!

Each day is the start of the rest of your life!

Make it count!!!

Thanks for the welcome Chris! And also for the inroduction to Hakumin Urushi - I've had a quick look at the website and the lacquer pens look glorious! Very interesting and I will for sure check into further.

I do write with my pens, but only occasionally with the vintage Namikis. The nibs have a good flex and I will see if I can post some samples.

Thank you for your response Sumoshogo!

I have three of Ernest's pens, and his work is very good. They sit well with my modern Nakaya pens and a little family of DaniTrios.........all with Maki-e or Urushi or Raden....or combinations. As yet I've not had the opportunity to get my greedy paws on a vintage like your Dunhill Namiki pens!!!

Henry has made your pens whole again - and I love seeing the photos of before and after!

Each day is the start of the rest of your life!

Here you go Chris - some writing samples for you! The balance pen's nib is more flexible than that fitted to the desk pen. For the fun of it I opened up some new bottles of ink from Pilot's Iroshizuku line - 'Yama budo' (plum red) and 'Syo-ro' (deep green) - nice enough colors but why are they never quite the same as what's on the packaging?!

Regarding Ernest at Hakumin Urushi, I do have a project in mind (but not this Dunhill Namiki fountain pen!). Still elementary right now but if it materializes I will share here on FPN.

Sumoshogo, you might be pleased to know that your latest Dunhill Pen that you have sent to me for repair is nearly finished. Will you be coming over here perhaps in the new year, or were you thinking that you would like it sent to you?

By the way, nice handwriting, and the inks look good too!

Thank you sumoshogo - beautiful pens, my favourite inks and nibs that are to die for!!!

I think Henry should send your mended pen via Tasmania...it would love a bit of warm weather and cricket on the TV!!!  :lticaptd:

Thanks Chris - I would love to accompany the pen to Tasmania, but very little chance of that! (Work takes me to Perth frequently, and occasionally Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Darwin, but never been to Tasmania!)

Truffle Finder - Great, I'm excited to see the finished job! I'm afraid I've no plans for UK till summer so best to have it sent to me in Singapore. Can I ask you please to pull the nib and see if there is a date stamp at the end? I should really learn how to do that myself but better leave it to someone who knows what he's doing! Also, if it needs a new sac, etc.

Many thanks!!

Yesterday, [and this morning actually!] I had a stroke of luck, I was looking through some boxes of 'stuff' here in the workshop, and I was able to make up another Jasmin Pen with a silver overlay!

This morning, [having had some success yesterday!] I had another look through the 'magic boxes'! and came across some silver Snake overlays, and having seen some Snake base-pens [while I was rooting around yesterday] now I've got several more pens to assemble today! Hopefully they will be in my display cabinet on Saturday.

Today was a little disappointing really!

But mince pies and various flavours of crisps [chips for those viewing across the water in the USA!] were put out for whoever wanted to eat them!

I sold one solitary pen today, a 'mint' Parker 75 in G/Filled finish, which went to a rather miserable European gentleman, who was hoping that I would lower the price from £95, but seeing as he was so unpleasant in his manner, I did not oblige!!!

He bought it anyway! :P ;)

I wasn't offered any outstanding vintage pens to buy, or rather those that I was offered were not worth buying, so that is about all my news for today!

I would like to wish everybody who might be reading this a very merry Christmas, and a very happy New Year! :)

Congrats on finding those bits to make up that Jasmine and Snake! I'd like to have a once-round your drawers to see what comes up! ;)

Could I keep what I find? You've got treasures hidden from yourself! :yikes:

Sorry today was so lacklustre....your miserable customer may have been experiencing those pesky holiday blues....they're prevalent right about now. It'll pass here shortly.

In the mean time, may all be merry and bright for you too, dear Truffle! This year passed so quickly it seems. May God bless us, every one! :D

I want to play Ghost of Christmas Future & predict we find many pen parts in those bins sufficient to make up pens for all of us. IF Truffle mends his ways & stops discarding perfectly good pen parts before he's made up all the pens he can make from them. Otherwise.......

Nowadays, the hassels of international travel could well leave one in a foul mood, and crowds of holiday travelers would only add to the frustration.

Despite the hassels of international travel, and the Festive Season Blues, I have taken on a 'repair project' which is quite a challenge.

The article I am talking about, is a small glass bottle [or 'flask']. It is about 5 inches tall, with a 2 and a half inch neck, on a spherical base, and the whole thing is covered in a filligree silver overlay! :)

It is reminiscent of a Tiffany style of overlaid flask, very pretty! :P

It is such a pretty little bottle, but the problem is that it has been damaged, there are three small holes in the glass, luckily near the base, so they are not easily seen, and there are quite a number of cracks which are visible through the gaps in the pattern of the filligree work.

Yesterday, I bought a packet of children's balloons! My idea, is to put one into the bottle, and inflate it until it 'fills' the gaps in the glass, then I am planning to fill those spaces with liberal doses of 'Cold Enamel', which I am hoping will detach from the balloon when it is deflated!

That's the plan anyway!

I'll let you know how I get on with it! ;)

Perhaps lubrication of the balloon prior to insertion?

I own a few silver overlay vases & perfume bottles, so I'm very aware of the challenge you face.

Yes, I have just done that!

I bought several bottles of the Cold Enamel in a small town a few miles away, and I'm pleased to tell you that the first coat has been applied and is now setting as I write this! :D

Anyway, I'll keep you posted!

Some hiatus!!!

I can't say that I have been completely immersed in the restoration of the silver overlaid bottle/flask over the last week, but things have progressed since we were 'off-air' as it were!

The three little holes in the glass near the base, are not holes now, but there is still some 'filling' to be done in the depressions that are still visible.

When they have been 'filled', I have decided to paint the glass with black enamel paint, I've always thought that the best background colour for filigree silver is black!

I'm sure that it will look good when it has been completed.

Happy New Year everybody!

I'm never letting you near my blue and clear glass bottles with the silver overlays. :-) Cobalt with silver is best.

OK! OK! OK! Ghost Plane!

I'll go with your experience, and if I don't like it, then I can always 'paint it black' afterwards.

I can feel a Rolling Stones Record coming on!!!
