That's today? Or tomorrow here? Bobbies on patrol....in the dark. I didn't realise she was such a hated person over there. Sad really.sad.gif

I suggest you catalog and calculate the monetary value for your own benefit.....a veritable gold mine no doubt....

Is the overlay gold? :-)

Loved or hated, her funeral will be a large public event, and like all large public events a target for many different sorts of ruffians and troublemakers.

Just got back from the expeditionary exploration into the depths of the workbench!!!

And there maybe good news from here in that another very similar design as the 'Orphan Pen' has been discovered in amongst the debris of the workings of my bench! As soon as I can, I will engrave them [cap and barrel] and curl them, and then send them off to Graham , and he will produce a base-pen to fit exactly.

Hopefully, when Neal has done the photography, a few pictures will appear here on this thread.

Hi there

Sorry, I'm a latecomer to this post.

I've just been in touch with Mr Simpole because he's taken on the restoration of a Conway Stewart I bought recently.

Only just sent the pen to him but he came highly recommended by Conway Stewart and I can confirm that he is indeed a gentleman.

Once he's done the restoration I'll post a picture of my pen so you can see his work.

Cheers

Barry

Wow, stunning craftsmanship!!

And I've been wondering for a whole week now how the heck this is done (aaargh! can't figure it out).

From the pictures I can tell he starts out with a rectangle to carve the design out of (what thickness/gauge of sheet silver would be best?)

He mentioned carefully bending it with a leather mallet in the video link on his website. And I'm pretty sure you don't mess with the barrel (grind a piece off) to make the overlay flush, but that it's really "over" so on top of everything.

So that means the the edges are probably a little tapered (how? Do you just whack them a little so they flatten out?) to make it a smooth transition.

Also - how do you get the overlay to fit extremely snugly over the barrel of the pen so that it doesn't move after it's placed?

And at what point do you solder the seem? (I'm guessing soldering is done with silver solder? Does it matter what kind soft/hard ??)

I'm very tempted to try this myself, come up with a design and eventually wrap it around one of my pens. Probably after a pretty decent while and a steep learning curve. I can draw and I can solder..what can go wrong :roflmho: .

I would be only too pleased to discuss exactly how I make my overlays, but first of all I think it would be a good idea, if I knew where abouts you live, [if you are abroad, that's OK, but it would mean using the telephone!] if you are living in UK, then perhaps you could come and see me at Portobello on a Saturday, and at least it would be easier to explain things 'face to face'!

PS. I'm pleased that you like my pens!

No Chance!

You don't really think that I have mastered the art of basic photography, 'AND' knowing the secret technique of scanning said images onto this thread!

Year, right!!!

Just in case anyone is wondering how I managed to put a new avatar on here, I asked my dear friend Neal if he would be kind enough to do it for me!

Thanks Mate!!!

It's just been 'one of those days' today!

Having made myself a mug of tea, I went to mess around on the computer, put the mug down on the desk that I use, [behind the keyboard I might add] and settled down to browsing 'stuff' on the screen, [as you do right?]

Then I went to tear out a couple of sheets of paper from my notepad, and in my exuberance, I knocked over the entire contents of the mug, which went everywhere, [except believe it or not the sacred keyboard!] Which was rather fortunate, as it is one of those wireless ones which cost a small fortune!

Anyway, I had a roll of kitchen paper nearby, and used several sheets to mop up all the areas where I thought that had 'got rained on!'

I went away, and made myself another mug of tea, and came back to my machine, only to find that the screen was completely dead, and wouldn't return to life, even when I talked to it and tickled its tummy! Even my numbskull brain could work out that I ought to check out that the power was still on and connected to the computer.

You've probably guessed by now that the multi-plug extension-lead-thingy, [with 'Surge-Control' no less!] was dripping with tea!!!

So having gone to no fewer than four shops where I thought I would be able to replace it, I got one at Homebase, near Walthamstow, NE London!

I promise to be more careful with my tea in future!

It's amazing where tea or coffee will get to when it has been spilt on a desk. I've never understood how the coffee migrated to the back of the second drawer - but not the top one- when my coffee went over I my desk last week. Still at least it didn't contaminate the ink in the top drawer, or make my pens sticky. The next drawer contains things like paper ...

I thought you would say that when you moved the papers another missing or forgotten overlay popped up. Oh well, glad it all worked out for you,

No such luck I'm afraid 'Postscript'!

But I have got plans to look around for 'bits and pieces very soon!

I'll keep you posted on any 'finds' that come to light!
