Large Size Patron?

Siv

Recommended Posts

Thanks to Goodguy we have a lovely picture showing all the WEs and their relative sizes. I was wondering if anyone out there has seen something similar for the Patrons?

My main reason for this is that I am still thinking about the Tate and would like to see how the size stacks up against other pens like the Morgan.

Also, are there any Patrons that are based on the i49 – i.e. with large nibs?

The Tate is based off of the small Boheme (I think), so it should be considerably smaller than the Morgan. Also, none of the Patrons are based off of the 149 or 139.

The only person who I know of who has an extensive collection of POAs and doesn't mind providing pictures is Darius (though he doesn't do it too frequently). If you search around, you might be able to find one of his older posts where his full collection is displayed. Hopefully he'll see this post...

Sorry PRAG, but he Tate is not a small pen. It's the size of the large Boheme. Between a 146 and a 149 in terms of size. So it's a big pen. It's shorter than most of te other POA's when capped because of the retractable nib.

I'll take some pictures tomorrow. I would have done it today, but I didn't see this thread earlier, and it's past 2:00am now here.

Hi Siv,

I don’t have all the Patrons but I own a couple and I am selling others so I have a fair number of them in front of me. By size, from left to right:

http://i636.photobucket.com/albums/uu82/multiechelon/many_01.jpg

Skeleton 333, Carnegie 888, Semiramis, Verne, Medici, Alexander the Great, Karl the Great (Charlemagne), Hemingway. Of course the Skeleton 333, Verne and Hemingway are not Patrons. They are only included for size comparison.

I don't know if the Carnegie 888 is the same size as the Carnegie 4810 but if it is then it is the largest of the Patrons that I have in front of me. It is nearly as large as the Skeleton 333 (which is the size of a 149). The Semiramis is only a hair shorter and it is really close. (the Semiramis is still sealed so I can't quite compare them apples to apples).

When it comes to nib, none of the Patrons have the 149-type nib, as can be seen in the following picture:

http://i636.photobucket.com/albums/uu82/multiechelon/many_02.jpg

Their nibs are all just like the Verne (which is the smaller 146-type nib) not like the Skeleton 333 or Hemingway. I have only inked the Medici yesterday but its nib writes very well.

Sean,

It may be an optical illusion, but the Semiramis looks to be slightly bigger than the Carnegie 888. The Semiramis I have measures 5 3/4" capped. The Francois I PoA is also this size capped.

Hi Mark,

You definitely might be right. It is super close. Because I can't take the Semiramis out of the plastic, I can't tell for certain. It is a hair either way. They are not separated by much.

The Semiramis definitely looks larger at first glance because it is squared off. The Carnegie is a lot more tapered so I think it maximum height is nearly the same (and I think possibly a hair higher) but it does not take up as much area near the top.

At the risk of going off topic, I like the look of the Semiramis a lot. I keep putting it in my pen tray, thinking that maybe I should keep it.

At the risk of being repetitive, I like the Hemingway. A very close second is the Carnegie...I'm going to have to look at one of those.

I can understand your attraction to the Semiramis. I had to get one after seeing photos posted on this forum. Beautiful filigree fretwork. But getting back on topic, I wonder where the Morgan fits into this size comparison. It strikes me as quite a large pen (may also be an illusion). Perhaps a member who has one could post its dimensions.

I think it is okay to be repetitive if it is correct. I also really like the Hemingway. It is my favorite writer.

Hi Siv,

Thank you so much Sean. Those are great pictures. I had no idea the Hemmigway has such a large nib! The skeleton is far beyond my means (or at least I think it is) but the Hemmingway may be an option... pity it has gold trim.

From Amir's review, the Dumas also has a big fat nib... Where am I going to find a MB pen with a 149 size nib in silver trim that is not $10,000? If course, it would be great if they made with 149 in silver trim...

Hi Siv,

Indeed, the Skeleton 333 is an expensive pen. I was very happy that I was able to acquire a user-grade version of the pen, but even then it is my most expensive pen.

You are correct that the Dumas and the Hemingway both use the 149-style nib. I have pictures of them together in another topic:

https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=122872

You have a hard quest. I am sure there are others on the forum that know if some pen meets this requirement, but I don't know of its existence.

I'm done measuring the pens this morning, and took 2 pictures, but they're not that good. I included a 149, current 146, an earlier sterling 146 (which is a bit shorter than the current, a large and small Bohemes for comparison.

Apparently these pens were not designed to be posted (with the exception of the Friedrich and Tate). They don't post well, and the Humboldt and Oppenheim do not post at all. I never noticed this before because I don't post while writing.

Diametre of caps and barrels of pens with filigree is of the filigree not the resin.

Darius,

Thanks for sharing the photos of your beautiful pens and providing the measurements. That is very helpful.

And you did get the Octavian and vOppenheim! Do you have a favorite POA?

I feel very magpie-ish looking at those photos... Also yes, they aren't made to be posted (other than the Boheme based ones). The boutique manager said so himself.

No problem Jeen. I hope others find it helpful. I got the Oppenheim when it came out. The Octavian is the most recent acquisition. Thanks to Bryant who is always a pleasure to deal with.

The filigree ones are my favourite. The Octavian and Semiramis are the top 2. Interestingly both based on vintage overlay designs.
