Noodler's Bay State Blue

ON a side note I have had BSB parked in an Esterbrook Dollar pen for about 3 months. I havent seen any feed problems and the pen is still working great.

In order to appreciate the sweet, you must truly taste the bitter....

You can get almost exactly BSB by mixing in an empty clear glass of champagne or better in an empty glass for

cognac. First put five mm of montblanc turquoise ink in the cup with a syringe then with another or the same syringe

add gradually drop by drop some montblanc Royal blue ink until you think got your desired blue tone. You can do the

same with Skrip peacock blue ink and adding some skrip blue black ink. Please dont mix montblanc with Sheaffer Skrip, after reading for months this forum I dont belive in mixing spare inks of diferent trade marks anymore.

Greetings.

Noodler's Baystate Blue has destroyed both my

  1. Lamy Vista
  2. Lamy Safari

nibs... The ink doesn't flow well after a little while, and then the part of the feed that connects to the nib just cracks off, kind of "flip"ing the nib off.

Lamy serviced/replaced the feed for me, but I'm never using BSB on this line of Lamys ever again.

I have used BSB in a Dollar demonstrator for months without any problems. The pen has only ever been filled with BSB. I love the ink so much I use it everyday, so I bought a Pelikan M205 blue demonstrator just for BSB. The nib on the Dollar demonstrator was just a little to fine for me.

How has that worked out for you? I have thought about doing the exact same thing. I won't care if it tints the blue demonstrator as long as the nib and feed on the Pelikan don't clog.

I put BSB in my Vista about a week ago and it's doing just fine. It had several different inks in it before BSB.

I haven't had any problems with it clogging the nib or feed. I'm pretty sure the pen will be stained, but I bought the pen just for BSB.

BSB certainly is an interesting ink with a terrific color. I don't use it often due to the feathering properties (something not unique to this ink and a reflection on the lousy paper used in my office) but tried it in a Parker 45 for a brief period, in a Pilot Murex and in the Platinum Preppy eyedropper that came with the ink. I wasn't wild about the performance in the 45 or Murex but there are a number of pen/ink combinations that don't yield my favorite results - it's part of the game (unless you're talking Waterman Florida Blue which works in every pen I've owned)...

I've kept it in the Preppy now for 2 years - use the pen every so often but not regularly. The only effects I've noted is that the Preppy nib had a black coating of some sort (not sure the material) which has softened and began to come off the nib - I have taken a paper towel and removed most of it easily with just a bit of rubbing. I find this a bit unusual and admit that it could be a property of the Preppy nib itself - it may do this with any ink, but that seems surprising. It does lead me to believe that BSB will over time interact with certain materials and weaken them. What materials, how weak and the actual scope of this interaction is unclear but seeing the effects on the Preppy make me not want to use it in any other pens...

A pen a day keeps the doctor away...
