Hari,

You might want to email your photos or a link to this thread to Montblanc. They should be aware of the advances of counterfeiters.

That is a very close copy. For someone who is not into MB pens and wanted to get a good deal on one, they would be fooled easily, and I don't think that even the pen enthusiast could blame them.

Very true.

Just curious Hari. Is the nib steel? Is the cap steel. Have you tried a magnet yet?

Yes, it passes the magnet test, it only means that the nib material is non magnetic steel maybe stainless steel. It is surely not gold, this I can say because the tipping is also gold plated, so the nib was plated with gold tone after welding the tip. I will do the magnet test with the cap today evening and report. Edit: followup: The cap and even the clip is non magnetic, i.e. not attracted to the magnet.

I don't know Jeen, I hope MB does not sue me instead for buying or photographing a fake MB! I am loath to disclose the shop which sold me the pen in good faith with full disclosure. I have absolutely no objection if any one of you want to take up this matter with MB. Pls feel free to post a link of this post to them.

Best,

Hari

Very useful. I thought something was up when I saw the nib but did miss many other cues. Learning new things all the time from the good folk here :)

Having admitted to my novice 'status' earlier, I think I can safely say that I would have been taken in completely by this - except for one thing - the price! Had a fake this good been posted on Ebay with a reasonably representive price, I think there would have been a fair few takers.....

The quality of this counterfit is UNBELIEVABLE. I've seen many fakes, none like this, especially the nib work. MB needs to be informed. This pen could pass as a genuine article and to the MODERATORS:

This topic should be PINNED for REFERENCE.

Hmm...unbelievably well executed fake i must say. Must be more careful next time.

This is exactly one of the reasons why i love to buy a vintage rather than the modern ones. I haven't seen a faked vintage in the history of montblanc (at least not to my knowledge) :happyberet:

That is incredibly scary. I'm a big fan of rose gold and the only one I have in my collection is the Boheme Marron. When I saw your pics I was like "How on earth did I miss that model?"...that was until I saw the sterling 'laser etch' and a few of the other tell tale signs. It was also missing the 'StoD' mark; although I'm not sure if that is on all the SS models.

You can also notice how the nib engraving is much finer on the actual article,

On the $12 piece, it looks like the nib engraving has been made in a 'stamped steel' kind of process, giving it a much more wider look (not to mention being incorrect in the first place). Also you can see how much smaller the MB star portion is on my Solitaire.

Scary nonetheless; many thanks to the OP :)

That is incredibly scary.

Thanks Mike, Your pictures of the genuine hallmarks will be a great reference in this thread. I was offered a genuine all silver MB in the 144 size, the cap had two additional assay marks(?) other than the 925 and STOD.

Good fake for those who are not as neurotically familiar with the little details of MB as we are : )

Sure! but easy to get scammed on ebay where the pictures may be deliberately kept out of focus/muddy.

I propose that we set up a gallery of all the legitimate MB models as reference esp the less common ones like the solitaire series, fountainpen.de has many models missing.

Best,

hari

Speaking of fakes.

I paid €28 or $35 for a most wonderful fake Dupont. When I bought it, I thought it could be fake, but on a flea market some times....just some times, one runs into some one who don't know what they have. One has great hopes.

I have some 10-15 pens of the middle "Pelikan" class, including a Cross Townsend and a Lamy Persona, P-75, so I wasn't too noobie.

I have been assured by those how know their counterfeit Duponts, mine is. Great instruction book, box, and even Dupont advertising pamphlet, along with the blank registration card.

They know places on line where the same pen can be had for $50-70, so I got my fake for half price.

For such work to make such a great counterfeit, they could be making their own, $300 or more pen. Even down to the spring loaded clip.

Well it's one of my prettiest pens , and for $35 I can not (my doggie).

It's just I can't honestly sell it for the money to buy a Colorful Sonnecken, Osmia and Sheaffer FFS Snorkel or Touchdown. Not that I'd been thinking about selling it until it was too late, and they told me it was fake.

I've not heard from Dupont yet. I sent the number and description of the pen to them.

Of course if some one went through so much trouble to fake it, they probably, have the original.

So my advice is if you are going to buy MB fakes, spend at least $35 on it. :P

Ransom Bucket cost me many of my pictures taken by a poor camera that was finally tossed. Luckily, the Chicken Scratch pictures also vanished.
